so i finally got the time (and the balls Embarassed ) to get around to replacing my rear cv boots and joints tomorrow. ive read through the muir book and the other 2 repair manuals i have and i think im ready to get this done. i know i dont need to remove the wheel, and i know this is one of the most hated jobs to do on a bus.

any words of advice before i make my arms feel like slabs of meat tomorrow? Rolling Eyes Laughing

Make sure you have the right triple-square tool for those bolts.

piece of cake. a 12 point 8 mm allen on a socket. clean all the grime out of the bolt heads first and make sure you seat that socket in there real good.
dont strip the head. it is easy to do if you're not careful.

It's called a M8 Triple Square... it's not a Allen or a Torx.

Not picking on you but i've seen guys hammer in Allens since they thought they'd fit and damage the bolt heads.

Also be prepared to find Allen (six side) since water cooled CV bolts are the same size and some CV boot kits come with them. So you could have mixed bolts.

I think it's this one.
http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=5796

Not ever having done this myself (My CV problems disappear when I am ready to address them) I think you need this part (supplied with some kits), a couple old newspapers or cardboard, roll of papertowel, and latex gloves if you got 'em...good luck!

Also have some 1 gallon zip lock bags and some 11" zip ties to seal them up after you are done.

A decent gear puller is handy as is a bench vise and some paper towels.

You could do it the easy, notice I didn't say cheap, way. You could just get two rebuilt axles. Remove the old ones, bolt in the new ones and your done and GTG

True, but then you have cheap aftermarket CVs.

If you have the time, i'd rather have rebuild German CVs.

What year did they change to the XYZ's or M8 12 points or whatever they are called? I've taken them out of many different years of type 2's and only remember 6-point Allens on older buses? I don't think I ever ran into 12 points till I started working of Vanagons. I do not believe my 78 had them.
The other thing that really works well is an impact wrench. Air wrench. It hits so quickly that it pops them loose before it rounds off the corners or slips or anything. Certainly clean out all the dirt and grease in order to get full penetration into the socket. If have 6 points and you are using only an L-shaped allen wrench, you will need about 1 foot of small steel pipe to use as a cheater to lengthen the wrench

I have seen both in use ever since I saw my first CV joint. As far as I know some VW's came with both types on the same car.
