When it is time to change the belt what else do you guys change while you are there?

Actuator?
water pump?

Best place to get parts?

This will be my first timing belt, is there a thread that covers this?

Thanks
tim

Your belt is reccomed at about 60k. You do not want these to break on you. If you do plan on doing it your going to want to also get all the rollers and a new water pump. I have found a good write up here
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?2840728-Ultimate-Timing-Belt-DIY!
some good places to get parts are either your dealer, which will cost you a bit or
http://wwwGermanAutoParts.com
is a good site and has good parts. You could use Autozone or any parts store if you trust them.

german auto parts has the most inclusive kit. It'll have a water pump, thermostat, timing rollers, tensioners, serpentine belts and the timingbelt. I think the one for my passat was @250.00 Make sure you get a metal impeller water pump! Stock is plastic and the impellers like to crack and fall off in time.

2001 jetta's had the 100k timing belt. Start thinking about it @80 and have it done before 100k. I waited until my passat had 100,500 on it and just got lucky the thing didn't break while I procrastinated.

During the job I ended up replacing the valve cover gasket, new platinum plugs, air filter, cabin filter, oil change, and a couple one way vacuum check valves that shattered when I touched them. Be careful moving anything as all of the vaccuum system will desintegrate upon flexing it.

Check the turbo while you're digging around down there! Mine has serious play for the low mileage it's at. I anticipate replacement within the next 20k miles. If it's loose or has oil in the compressor housing you'll need to get it done soon. @120,000 miles is all they're good for.

In the Vwvortex thread I found this site for parts, what do you think? $249.99 looks like everything I would need
Timing belt
Tensioner Roller
Tensioner assembly
Idler roller (comes on the tensioner assembly)
Water pump with metal impeller
Accessory drive belt
Thermostat
2) 1.5 liter bottles of G12 Coolant
Thermostat Housing
Motor mount bolts (7)
Camshaft seal
Crankshaft seal

Edit. this looks like the same kit for $224

https://www.mjmautohaus.com/catalog/product_info.p...ts_id=2412

I thought about having it done but guys around here want
$1100.00

That kit at mjmautohaus seems to be a good deal. I wonder what the quality is though.

I got the stuff from mjmautohaus. It seems like the use the same brand of parts as the other guys. Their kit includes the bolts too. free shipping.

I am going to take the plunge tomorrow.

Got it all done. Car seems to pull a little harder. This was the biggest pain in the butt I have ever experienced.
I would like to beat the guy who designed the motor mount.

Also try not to spill any of the powersteering fluid. It is like $20 for a can of it.
