Well here is some more interesting stuff. I looked closely at the two "zwitter" intakes that I have and found that one had 25hp and the other 36hp endcastings! (1.125" vs 1.250" head facings).

The lettering on the black one is either just not there, or worn so bad you can't read it.

So does this say that this intake was used in production into '54 when the 36hp engines came out?

There have been a couple of 36hp industrial engines that have shown up here with that manifold. I think that is the only place they were ever used.

I have never seen any owners manuals or documentation leading me to believe that the zwitter style 36hp manifold was ever used on engines that went into vehicles. All of the '54 manuals show the uterus manifold and since the manuals would have been put together well before the actual production of the cars started, I think that is a pretty good indicator that the first '54's rolled off the line with the uterus manifolds.

Well, as I posted before.
Here you see one in a car.

The industrial engine use would make sense. If they moved on to the uterus manifold in '54 coincident with the 36hp, they might have had a lot of the old design left, and since carb heating probably wasn't as much of an issue with industrial engines, they might have just put the new endcastings on for 36hp and used them. The endcastings were pressed on with these intakes, not brazed.

That is not a 36hp manifold. That is a 25hp manifold.

What I am saying is that they never put the 36hp version of the zwitter manifold in cars, only on industrial engines.

They 25hp version went in cars and buses.

Ok, so just when we think we have all of these early intakes sorted out, check out what I found:

Yes, it is a 701E, with 18mm heat riser tubing, 36hp endcastings, AND the creased aluminum jacket. So, I think this means that the more common 701E (20mm tubing, non creased jacket) came out well after the 36hp engines, and that was when VW finally "figured it out" and increased the wall thickness of the hear riser tubing. Anything in PR that indicates this change?

Also means that the 25hp "701" ("E" ground off) replacement intake came out well beyond the end of the 25hp, and even the start of the 36hp.

Somewhere previous in this thread, I posted a pic of of a jacket with a fuzzy number that we were discussing if it was a B or an E. Perhaps it was an E like this one....

I posted a bunch PR info earlier in this thread about 36hp manifolds regarding heat riser tubing size. This was most likely one of the earlier ones but perhaps during a transition period where some details changed. They also could have had different suppliers so there could be minor differences from vendor to vendor at that time. Production was really gaining speed in the mid 50's so that is very possible.

I doubt but it could be possible that the 20mm tubing version came out after production of the 36hp stopped. There seems to be too many of the 20mm versions around but then again there are hardly any uterus manifolds to be found in the wild so it is possible I guess but that was a 1 to 2 year part at the very most. However remember that the 36 hp motor continued on after '60 in other countries so there could have been later refinements that occurred later.

The 20mm manifold obviously came later rather than earlier.

I have always maintained that the 701 25 hp muffler came out after production of the 25 hp had stopped. The technical bulletins I have posted show the zwitter manifold as part of the upgrade to replace the 26 vfis carb and K manifold with the later 28 carb as late as '55. The timelines I have posted also show the zwitter manifold as the replacement part for the K manifold into '55 or '56 when it appears to have been replaced by the 701 manifold.

Re-read all of my posts in this thread. I have posted all of this info. I think it even explains when the 20mm version came out.

I agree, there are way too many 20mm 701Es around for them to have not been used during 36hp production.

My guess is that this 18mm 701E is a short run early version of the intake.

I'll look back at the other post's Chris. I want to make a graphic map that shows all of the different intakes over time, replacements, and footnote the PR entries that support them..

I actually started to cut the heat risers off that intake shown above, to make a zwitter intake out of it.... then I realized that I HAD to keep if for the "Intake Museum" .....~

Does anyone recognize this manifold? It was on an early 1952 Barndoor Engine. It is marked 08.02 as the Zwitter manifold and also K01

Hey guys - sorry, I know I'm resurrecting this thread from the dead.

BUT - I have a Feb '54 oval. The intake manifold that came on the car (with the incorrect engine) did not pass my leak test. I am needing a new one.

However, upon reading, I learn that the uterus manifold is likely what's correct for my car, and well.... they're awful.

Anyhow. I'm in Canada, so likely my car was sent with a cold weather package. I am wondering what would be an acceptable intake manifold for my car, given that I don't want to find, use, or deal with the faulty uterus manifold?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

A 701E is what was on the car.
