1. Dual PDSIT's should work fine, albeit with less power than FI
2. As long as you have all the bits, should work very nicely
3. You run the cable around the pulley and up thru the hole under the flap lever, push the lever forward and tighten the cable under the nut and screw. Be sure the rod spring is trapped correctly to pull on the cable, and that the flaps work correctly.
4. I think it has a more gradual ramp |

Hey guys, first post.
I was wondering what is good place to look for a type iv engine? I'm looking to buy a Baja, but I'd prefer not to putter around on 60hp. I also don't want to pay for a $20,000 Jake raby engine, considering I'm looking at under $4k for the car.
Thanks |

Just build a nice T1 motor with a descent cam and carbs. In a Baja there is no reason not to make power. You aren't pushing a bus around. BTW - this is a bus forum not a bug forum. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Well then throw a 200, 250, or 300 HP Type 1 in it. That's what a lot of Bajas run. _________________ 71 Superbug

X-2 post it in the Hbb-off road forum
that's the dune buggy/Baja bug forum
also, unless you are trying to enter the Baja 1,000 an upright bug engine is cheaper and more inline for weekend off road.
or Go to www.fatperformance.com as Ron & Greg build Winning type 4
off road engines. _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

Thanks for the quick reply. I actually didn't realize it was a bus forum until after I posted, sorry. |

Hydraulic lifters take shorter pushrods than do solid lifters.
you may also want to use different springs with the solid lifters, as the hydraulics used heavier springs. |

Any Type 4 engine with solid lifters. 1.7, 1.8, or 2.0. The pushrods you want will have aluminium shafts instead of the steel shafts of the hydraulic pushrods. They all have steel inserts in the ends. You can also buy steel cut-to-length pushrods which are the way to go if your engine has been stroked or otherwise customized very much. |

Quite a few vendors to buy the springs and you can also buy Stock pushrods here in the classified too.
I also have a few sets of 1.7 pushrods if you PM me
www.cbperformance.com
www.pelicanparts.com and others have the springs for Solid lifter camshafts _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

I've never done it but as far as I know you can change springs with the head in place. Air-hose adapter in the plug hole to pressurize the combustion chamber to keep valves tightly closed.
Also in a real bind you can shove some 1/4" rope in the plug hole and run the piston up tight to compress the rope and hold the valve closed. _________________ 71 Superbug

I picked up a type 4 1.8 liter, L-Jetronic fuel injected engine last weekend that has sat in a old 75' bus for what looks to be its hole life. It has everything it came from the factory with (never been touched) I would like to keep it FI but have never messed with Type 4's before and it has what looks to be a large wiring harness coming off the engine any idea what this plugs in to? And what are some of the major point do you want to trouble with type 4 FI engines , all comments are welcome, looking for all the information I can get thanks

I don't understand any of the technical stuff but am I right in thinking that a 1.7L out of a Porsche 914 will work in a '73 bus? _________________ 1973 Wild Westerner "Mr. Peabody"

It will work, but a 1700 or 1800 for a bus would work better.
Engine letter code would be "CB" or "AW". |

Yes it will work but not quite as well as a bus 1700. IIRC the cam has a different grind to push the lighter car vs the more torquey cam in a bus. Also it will be a PITA to add oil as the filler is positioned much differently. |
