Hi, I'm in the midst of adjusting my valves on my type 4, believed to be a 2.0.
My Question is, are the valve adjustment nuts 14mm?
I thought it was 13 mm but it doesn't fit, and 15 mm is too big. Just looking for confirmation. _________________ -Tony

I have a 74 Safari hightop and am doing a little engine work for the very first time, and I have come across a little line coming out of the right side of the charcoal canister....where in the world does it go? I cannot seem to find anything in the vacinity that it will plug into, and I cannot find any info on line. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The Large hose connects to the air filter housing
The small hose ends up going to the fuel tank and there should be a connection for it on the top of the engine compartment ceiling.
These items are Emission related and NOT engine related. _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

Yes. Hydraulic rocker arms and some solid rocker arms on type 4 engines are 14mm on the flats. The adjuster itself is larger as well 10mm vs 8mm. |
Was this a model year/displacement change? Or sloppy mechanics using hydraulic adjusters on solid engines? _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!

i am enjoying learning all the differences in these great motors, now i have a question that has not been covered. when it comes to rocker arms, jake states they always use 1.7 rockers in all their t-4 builds, modified of course with 911 adjusters. my question is what is the difference in 1.7, 1.8, and 2.0 rockers? is it the ratio? the size threads on the adjusters? or just that they are made better? since i am rebuilding my motor for my squareback for the second time due to head failure, this time i am trying to use some better parts.a vanagon block since i like the vertical dipstick and cleaner looking castings, stock 94mm german p&c's, stock 71mm crank, a set of low mileage 1.8 larger valve heads from a 412 wagon, raby 9550 cam, new webcam solid lifters, larger rocker arm studs, chrome molly pushrods, raby heavy duty single springs, twin dell 40's. i have the 1.8 and 2.0 rockers but i just want to use the best i can with this budget build. does any one have a set of 1.7 rockers in there pile of parts they'd let go reasonable? thanks for any help on this. _________________ beer! not just for breakfast anymore!!

You will want to match lifters to the CAM the hardness could be different between webcam and Raby parts. Guessing but maybe Webam does Raby CaMs in which case you should be groovy.
I did te upper valve train upgrades on my 79. Seems to be a good but costlier upgrade. _________________ Special Thanks to:

I bought the Raby valve train kit and it is a webcam to Raby spec. I also have a 2.0 that I dropped off with Adrian at Headflow Masters last weekend. He has a 30 day wait so I still have time to collect parts for the build and I too wondered what the advantage of the 1.7 rockers were? They would be going in new CS heads from Raby as well. _________________ 1973 Campmobile http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=524511&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

|
|
Levi, the problem with 10mm adjusters is valve guide wear and the fact that
with 8mm adjusters you buy Porsche swivel feet adjusters or CB Performance
elephant feet adjusters.
It would be great if someone made 10mm swivel feet adjusters but they don't.
So, to keep your engine in top shape buy a set of 1.7 rockers and have them
prepped for the swivel feet adjusters. they will need to have about 0.060 removed which can be done with a belt sander or an end mill.
or, if all your 10mm adjusting screws have a good surface on them and not
flat spots you could run those also.
Solid spacer kit also for the 1.7 rocker shafts.
10mm adjusters came out with the AW engines 73-74 year. If I remember. _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

I know this is a rookie post but why do you have to change the fan set-up (DTM) to put a type 4 motor into a type 1 bus? |

The T4 engine bay cutout is a very different size from a T1 engine bay. The stock T4 cooling system won't fit at all. _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!
