I've had excellent luck using Indian Head Gasket Shellac on my covers. It smells like death but my valve covers don't leak anymore so... Rolling Eyes

I've been told that lip was used in the manufacturing process to allow excess paint to drip out easier. I had the same question a while ago and assumed that mine were bent but every set of covers I tracked down had the same sized lip in the same spot.

Remember to always position your covers on the heads with the VW logo facing down!

Thanks, I just used the Indian Head Gasket Shellac on my gasket when installing my new Cold Start Valve yesterday.

Interesting manufacturing protocol!

Thanks, Definitely going upside down with the logo from what I was reading on another thread re: valve cover gasket leaks...

Yesterday I made the piston oil cooling modification to the rods as per the 1980's VW tech bulletin. Pretty easy to do with a good file if you are careful. Although originally intended for 2.0 bus engines, the modification can be beneficial for 1.7 and 1.8 engines as well. Simple, but effective.

i'm working on a 79 auto tranny bus for someone and it's from cali a few years back. i was wondering if there is a way to change out the muffler and stuff so they can run an aftermarket one. i know the 79 cali buses have a catalytic converter i was wondering if i can take it off now the bus is in ky. i have to pull the motor and tranny anyways because the bus has sat to long and all the gas has turned to tar so there is a ton of stuff i have to replace anyways.

Can anyone tell me what i would be better off with either 36 idfs or 40idfs.

i have a new mild 2l type4 with head work and a nice cam i want a nice driving engine not going to be reving it to high just a nice cruiser. i have both 36s and 40s and looking to build them up to a nice set of carbs but just not sure which set of carbs to go with.

Any help would be awesome

Thanks Matt

Hey y'all....my first post. Thanks for a brilliant site. I sold my neglected (not by me) '79 westy for $1k more than I paid 8y ago ($4500) but it didn't have pointless ignition. I'm left with a '76 westy that only a Canadian mother could love, but it goes along the road fine, and I'm going to give her the love that's needed, including a newer engine and I'm not sure what's in there 1.7 or 1.8 (not orig motor). I'll bet there's a bore/stroke/interchangeability table on here somewhere.....if you could say where or add, even more brilliant. Best regards from Canada!

Sorry no one answered. If you're not gonna run FI, the IDFs with the CB Performance would be the way to go.

Greetings everyone. My first post in this forum...

I have read through most of the pages of this thread but a question remains...

I have picked up a Type 4 engine. It has a couple of labels/stickers that make IDing difficult.

Can anyone tell me anything about these photos that would help me to understand the size of the engine.

I am a total noob re: Type 4 engines so be gentle. Any questions will be answered to the best of my ability.

Thanks

Two places to look: 1.right under the eyelet hook in your picture, there will
be a VW # on the cooling shroud.
2.there is the same number(if you're lucky) stamped
into the right case half, it's hiding between the shroud
and the breather tower, just beyond 12 o'clock
position if you stare at the fan itself, there may be
debris in there, seeing as they stamp it on a
near horizontal surface.

Looks like a Vanagon engine to me. The breather isn't the bus style nor is the fan shroud.

The engine is fairly similar to a '79 bus engine in that it has square port heads. To run it and not have to do a lot of fabricating you are going to want to find a set of '79 Federal heat exchangers and a bus fan shroud.

Thank you so much for the replies. I will check those areas for a # later today when I get out to see it again.

With respect to heat exchangers etc., do these pictures help? I assume these are what you are talking about...

Vanagon shroud, Vanagon oil filler, Vanagon part number, Vanagon mounts, Vanagon heat exchangers (with the ports sawn off Confused ), if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck................

I'd be very suprised if it's not a hydraulic valve 2 liter with square ports.

It says CV code on one of the stickers. Bottom left corner so that puts it 80-82 air cooled. Rebuilt be VW in the late 90's I would guess.

Thank you for all the replies. I appreciate the info. I am sort of familiar with Type 1 engines... but a lot to learn re: Type 4.

I have a Type 34 project and debating whether this would fit and if so, whether it is a good idea.

Matt.

980-83 Vanagon, 2.0 liter, L-Jetronic, Hydraulic Lifter

Apparently, I have this engine sitting in my barn. Really appreciate the help. Hate to be greedy re: help but can someone explain what L-Jetronic is or point me to an appropriate thread so that I can read to my heart's content?

Thanks so much.

I will try to find out as much as I can on my own, but hoping one of the very knowledgeable folks here can shortcut me to a great thread to read.

Plus the L-Jet is your basic fuel injection system on the 75-82 buses.

I just recently acquired a '73 bay window. I understand that these came with dual carbs. However, the p o had installed a single carb. Anyone had experience with this before?

Very common on these rigs. Search for "progressive".

Read at ratwell.com, and also look for posts in TheSamba by SGKent, he has some info linked in his signature line.

And... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=482560 which has this in it http://x19.xwebforums.org/wiki/images/e/e4/VW_L-Jetronic_Fuel_Injection_Workshop_Manual.pdf
