Ok I've had this dog for a good while she is a great dog, but I'm sick of all the hair. She sheds worse than any dog I've ever seen, I sweep every day and it seems like I can never get it all. Its getting old trying to keep it up all the time. Does anyone out there have any ideas on ways to slow down the shedding. I will say she gets baths weekly and I get so much hair off her during those baths its hard to see how she sheds so much. I've either got to get this under control or I don't think I"ll be getting a inside dog again unless it one that doesn't shed.. Any ideas at all would be great!

If it were me, I would not bathe her so often. I have a German Shepherd Dog that only sheds once a year...for 365 days. Wink I bought a good brush at Target, it has stiff bristles and a button on the back that cleans the bristles. A good brushing a couple times a week keeps things under control. What kind of dog is she? Too much bathing can dry out their skin and compound the problem, especially when using "dog shampoo".

She is a mutt, part bulldog, part boxer part who knows. I might try the baths less, now is there any way to keep her from stinking if I bathe her less.

I had one like that too. There are some shampoos to use and Omega 3 tablets and some other items, if I remember. I can tell you none of the stuff we tried worked though.

Sorry...

Instead of vacuuming the floor every day you should start vacuuming the dog every day. My mom used to do that when I was a little kid. She finally gave the dog away when we moved and refused to ever get another one.

bingo - up 'til a few months ago, we had three labradors - and they are house-dogs...

brushing them regularly knocks the shedding way back, especially at the change of seasons from hot to cold and vice-versa... it is also good for their coats and helps keep their natural odor low...

After my first Frisbee-catching Lab, I thought I'd never change. But when my wife brought home a Bichon against my wishes, I can now appreciate the virtues of a dog that leaves its fur at the groomer once a month, instead of all over the house every day.

Any recommendations for a brush. I can't seem to get muck hair out with the ones I have.

1) FEED YOUR DOG GOOD FOOD!!!!! you'll be amazed at what a GOOD diet will do for your dog. no wheat, no corn, no soy for sure. i feed Taste of the Wild which also gets rid of rice. i know way more about dog food than i should and have feed ALL of the high end foods. TotW holds it's own to all of them at about 1/2 to 2/3 the price of most in it's class. a LAMB formula food is even better for dogs with skin/coat issues. Tractor Supply is the best place to buy TotW and good next level down is 4Health also from Tractor Supply.

2) STOP bathing your dog so often. you're washing away needed natural oils. again i feed my dogs QUALITY food and they haven't had a bath since february and are just now starting to get just a very light doggyness.

3) brush your dog 2-3 times a week with a good brush like a bamboo or furminator. regular brushing to remove dead undercoat will do more for shedding/smell than a weekly bath will.

4) stop sweeping. get a vaccum that you can use over solid floors to thats pet hair rated.

NONE of this will eliminate the hair but all of it should help greatly....ken....

I agree with bathing less. My girlfriends dog Molly (lab/pit) used to shed like crazy when we gave her baths more often. I tried different shampoo's, and nothing really helped. Then I simply cut back because I noticed that her skin was starting to get really dry. Soon after, the shedding went down, and her coat now looks healthier.

I use oatmeal shampoo!

I have a pug, bubbles. He sheds 365 days a year. I did not know pugs shed year round, now I do. You just vacuum a lot more and life goes on.

My 2 guys shed a bunch, I vacume 2-3x a week w/ a Dyson, we also have to feed our GSD the "Taste of the wild" Salmon/no wheat food, due to a common skin condition. We brush them every week or so...

Food may help.
One of the sales guys at petsmart gave me a dissertation on the various premium foods and some are specifically oriented to improving your dogs coat. I have no clue if any of this is true but I do think my giant jack Russell mix hasn't shed as much since switching from science diet to blue buffalo.
(Not a big fan of science diet)

HANK,
unless you're feeding Blue Wilderness you still aren't quite there on the high end food scale(though your paying about that scale). the regular Blue isn't grain-free other than i think one or two formulas if at all. not a fan of blue.

one thing you need to look at with the higher end foods is the fat content needs to go up with the higher protein contents. even Blue Wilderness doesn't do this. their levels are commonly 36 protein 15 fat. a 36% protein food should have 20% fat. the Taste of the Wild i feed depending on formula is 25% protein 15% fat or 32% protein 18% fat.

for dogs still having coat issues a spoonful of olive/ rice bran/ wheat germ oil on their food a coupla times a week doesn't hurt either. all do about the same....ken...
