I would start with 3 qts, run the engine for a bit and let it sit for an hour or or so then check the level and add accordingly.
Hope this helps. Post pix if you have them please.

Those engines use a bit less than a 1600 I think but correct me if wrong please. That is why I was thinking 3 qts for a base to start with as the larger engines use 2.75 or there abouts. Do you think the filter will hold a full quart of oil in it? I have seen MANY of them but have never had any hands on with that set up, so I am learning a bit myself here.

Probably 1 liter (1 quart?) is too much...not sure. But, because it's easier to add some more oil than to remove it, do what Bajamike said, except add only half a liter and check the level after running the engine and waiting for the oil to sit.
Just add the necessary to reach a litle more than half the distance between the two marks on the dipstick.
Also, I'm assuming that you already know that it's advisable to have a restrictor at the oil filter inlet in order to mantain a proper oil pressure.
Hope this helps |

Only miner problems with start up. Distributor shorting out, replaced fibre washer on the condensor fixing. A leak on the fram filter. Unable to get gasket replacement. Made a 5mm rubber gasket with no leaks!!
Finally finished engine rebuild engine running sweet - Taking car for MOT Saturday & hopefully ready for the volksworld show |

That is a great looking engine, glad you have things sorted out.
Any photos of the car?

my seal was gone as well so i used one from a truck oil filter, go to a mechanic an look through the old filter bin an find one to suit.
u can see the difference in thickness, i havnt used it yet, but i blocked off one side and blew through it with the original seal an it had air leaks then put on the other one an did the same trick an ended up lookin like a trumpet player.
just a thought for a seal _________________ shiny paint doesnt make it worth any more |
