Friday after replacing my battery and bringing my Vanagon back to life I spent around 3-4 hours scrubbing all the winter gunk off her. I'm talking Simple Green and scotch bright bath here. Needless to say I got a little crazy with the pressure washer and shot some test spots in the engine compartment. This morning I started her to drive to work and now the passenger side fuel rail is leaking badly. Could be coincidence, could have been me hitting it with the washer, who knows.
Long story out of the way, I would like to see nice shiny clean stock 2.1's - and go. |

The thing is: Modern engines can be 'cleaned' from a dirt & oil standpoint but the complexity of systems means they just don't look as 'clean' from a clutter-free aspect as an older engine (like that air cooled pictured).
My 1.9L --
Still, a reasonably clean engine bay is a joy to work in even if it doesn't make anything run better. |

I mean no gunk or oil coating the entire thing. It seems I may be stuck awhile longer with my stock 2.1, so I might as well make it look nice. I've seen Ford/Subaru/Nissan engines all painted and nice, but not many nice clean stock 2.1's except the kits from GoWesty (and that was from their website). |

Use caution when cleaning an engine. Very rare you are helping it operationally, and very common you are shortening the life of something with pressure water and moving dirt into crevices with liquid.
Love the locomotive - now THAT's a clean engine! _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1988 Toyota Supra 5 speed targa, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

I agree, but a clean engine runs cooler. |

I would NEVER pressure wash a motor. Use Gunk and HOT water & be very careful with the spray.
Be sure the water does not drain down the street - storm drains go into the rivers, lakes, and oceans you like to camp at, and into the fish you like to eat.
BTW - a dirty engine is not going to run much hotter if it has an oil or water heat exchanger on it (usually incorrectly called a "radiator" in the US).
A clean motor does make it more fun to work on, and easier to spot any leaks or other problems, like cracks in hoses. _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

looks cool, but it's dead and in parts now.
Thousands down the drain.
Lets hope this investment goes better
