I have a 1990 5 speed manual VW Cabriolet with an irratic idle. Sometimes when I start it up it rev's up to about 3000rpm's without touching the gas. Other times it rev's with just a tap of the gas pedal. It will also rev after the car warms up. Seems to clear the problem with a quick press of the gas pedal a few times.
Any thoughts about what is causing it?
I'm wondering if it could be the electonically controlled idle air stabilzer valve.

It might not be that - I would make sure it is not leaking air around the rubber boot air supply or wd40 the linkage
