Looking good man! You started with a cage about like I have now. Your motivating me to get out my welder and do a little adding on. I want to push the front out about 4-5 inches. Did you leave yours in the stock position? |
i pushed it forward like 2 inches i went out and bought the ball joint to link pin beam adapters put it all on and found out the bulk head was pushed up like 3/4 to an inch so i started to weld the front cage in then took off the adapters and got the beam straight and finished the rest of the front cage |

Hi its been a few days since i have wrote on here but i havent really done much the the baja but i will tell you the couple things i have done
i only had one seat harness and didnt have a mount for the shoulder part but i got one and welded it in and i bought another harness for the passenger and mounted it. i also mounted a tool box and filled it. today i mounted brake lights and wired them up. i am just waiting for my front shock to get here and then if i am lucky i can take it out for a little putt this weekend |

Hi everyone its been awhile sinces i have posted anything on here been busy planning my wedding and havent had money for my baja but i did get to take it out for a run a few weeks ago. took it out for i think it was about a six hour run i was really surprised i did make it home. but i did have on problem i didnt support the cage running to the beam and bent the cage which pushed the beam back so i have to either heat it up and straighten it or cut and remake it. and i found out that my shock arent stiff enough for the back of the car and my tires hit the body. i am going to go 3x3 and see how it rides then maybe i wont have to change up my shock. |

Hey dude, nice build!
I have a question. I am looking at doing a front bearing conversion for the same reason you did. Finding the conversion bearings is easy, but what seal do I use? _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

You may need more spring [fatter torsion bar] more than more shock. If both sides are hitting at once you definately need more spring. If you put on longer arms you definately will need more spring.
I found that the 3x3 arms on my Baja really work with 28mm bars, and that the short ones are trouble. The leverage on the torsions may be double that of stock arms, so twice the spring is about right for the conversion. Also, the Baja may be more likely to get some air time than a stock bug....
Don't need the tire clearance to the torsion stub any more with the 3x3s and the shorter torsions sagged every outing. The long ones do not.
My '57/70 car with stock length arms and triple shocks always rubbed the tires like yours at the seam, but the torsions are smaller too.
I also found out that a 1 1/4" notch is too much! Both spring plates failed at once. Took out a couple of fancy 930 CVs too. I removed the lower stops and changed to the longer mounting plates and use limit straps now. And use full sized, unnotched, thick SwayAway spring plates.
I relocated the rear fenders above the trim line to work with the long travel rear suspension. Nothing hits the tires.
The car rides so well you don't even feel getting air and landing below about 1'. |
