i have searched and cannot find what im looking for. my trans is leaking gear oil from the base of the axle. i need to know what seal(s) i need to replace. i drained all of the gear oil in the trans and am going to replace both axle seals. also are there any good instructions on how to change the seals in question?

one other question..... the bracket for the bowden tube was broke at some point on the trans case. can i grind/cut off what is left and install a later bowden tube bracket. i just dont want to cause any structural issues for the case.

where's your axle boots??? that'd for surely fix that leak Wink

that tube doesn't turn, the axle is inside the tube, gear oil runs down said tube to the bearings at the wheel. you have to have axle boots around this area to seal it off so you don't have what you are currently having. get good boots too, if you don't they'll leak...ask me how i know Embarassed

i have the axle boots. i am cleaning up the trans and changing the gear oil and such before reinstalling it into the rebuilt chassis. this was a substantial leak i know that the oil flows down the tube but is suppose to leak around the axle?

The rubber boots seal up the trans to the axle tube. Oil will leak into the boot but not out of it.

the other side is dry as a bone as in no gear oil just grease. it does not leak like the this side. i thought the boots were to keep the socket from getting grime and gunk on it. this is leaking gear oil from the case. i would think if it was suppose to leak like it does there would have to be an air tight seal. at the rate its leaking the boot would have to hold a few ounces if not more of gear oil. the original axle boots on this trans were ripped. i did not see anything that suggested a loss of gear oil. im not doubting your guys information just trying to figure out what is going on with this situation. i like to understand how things work.

yep, they hold a lot, this is why you must buy good ones. the boots are made to keep oil from leaking out, not grime from getting in (well, i guess they do do that too(teehee do do))

also, if the car leans even the slightest to the leaky side, that's where it'll come out. trust me, jack up the leaky side and it'll come out the other...also, GREASE???? there shouldn't be any grease in it, just gear oil. clean it up really good, get those boots on, if you have the seamed kind make sure the seam points at about 2 o'clock fill her up and she shouldn't leak after that...at least from there Laughing

thanks again man, i guess i just needed the tutorial. i am the cat that was killed by curiosity. Very Happy i have a little more cleanup on the trans to do, filler up with gear oil and new mounts and then i get to move onto the body. i looked at your 59 build. im working a 61 ragtop. mine has some cancer in the same areas yours did. fender attachment areas, bottom of the quarters. anyways thanks for clearing up the cob webs in the brain.
