I have a 68 4 speed trans on my rail with n50 15 tires on the back. I want to change the rear tires to slighly narrower time and tires. If I go taller do I sacrifice HP and torque? It seems like first gear is geared low anyway....[/i]

not real clear on what you're asking, so I will just tell you what is available instead.

chances are you have 4.125s in a 68 trans.

next NUMERICAL step up: 4.375. IMHO not much change for the expense

there are aftermarket 4.86s, which look weak to me. and some freak show 5.14s in the classifieds. that's it for T1 boxes

if you want 4.57, 4.86 ( robust ) or 5.38s, you need a bus box.

going the other way: you have 3.88s and 3.44s as your remaining choices.

I'm running 31's on a 4:12 tranny. Pulls real nice but a little higher in first than I'd like at times. I have a 1835 but I don't expect it makes much more than 80-90 H.P. tops.

Yeah not a lot of info on what your running. Tires can effect you final derive a lot, especialy with a little engine like our VW's.
You can go 4.86 in your car box and they can last, but for the expense of opening up the tranny and having it done right, you could swap in a bus box. A bus box would be a lot stronger and allows you to goto 5.38 and they are a stronger gear compared to a car box 4.86.
