I have a 1969 beetle and I am now hearing a squeak (bird chirping) sound when the car starts to roll.

The faster I go the faster the chirping sound. I have inspected the front wheels and have now moved onto the rear. I raised the back of the bug and put it on jack stands to see if I can get the sound to happen again when I put the car in gear. No squeak.

It seems that it only happens with the weight of the car on the rear wheels. Could it be the CV joint or the axle or the wheel bearings? I have replaced the entire break system a couple of years ago.

Also, when pulling the passenger side wheel drum off, I noticed that the “toothed” axle pulled about ¼” out with the pulling of the drum. Once I got the drum off, I was able to push and pull the toothed axle in and out about ¼”. Is that normal?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not being snarky when I say that "beelte bird churping"sounds a little weird. I swear I've made posts that got no responses b/c I had big misspellings in the title but got responses once I fixed them. Just a thought.

And now.....

When say you took the drum off, do you mean literally just the drum or are you also talking about the backing plate? B/c just taking off the drum there shouldn't be 1/4" of play but once you take off the backing plate you've removed the grease seal and taken tension off the bearings so some very slight movement is to be expected.

If you only took the drum off, then that's another story but check out the video in this thread and see if you can relate to it:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=452619&highlight=rear+wheel+bearing+noise

That kind of side-to-side play wouldn't be a bad CV joint (nor would the chirping sound as bad CV's tend to click or tick as the ball bearings in it are what's making noise).

When you go fast enough, if the chirping become constant....almost like a whine then you've got bad wheel bearings and you should replace. You might also want to have a new set of spacers on hand b/c if you find that the outer one (most likely one) is messed up then it won't matter much when you put new bearings in.

Spacers and a little explanation of what they do

Provide an update if you can....

It turns out it was the torque (or in my case, lack of torque). I tightened it up and my son is back on the road.

Thanks for the advice samba members!
