I did some searching and couldn't find anything related to this topic.

69 Fastback

How do I remove a buckpack short throw and re-install the stock shifter? There is a reverse lock-out on the short throw currently installed but I want to reinstall the stock shifter.

Just trying to make sure I know what to do before tackling this job. Does it require to get underneath the car or is it pretty straight forward from the interior?

very straight forward, but you will need the reverse lockout plate for a stock shifter. If you don't have that, do not install it.

Make sure it isn't installed upside down or rotated 180 degrees.

Thanks! Very Happy

The shifter kit did come with one of those plates so I'm in luck.

Which way is the right side up for the reverse-lock plate and which side does the larger indent go on? If right is right and front is FRONT of car.

I'm assuming the larger indent goes on the right side but does it go up into the car or down into the gear box?

The lips should face up,smaller one on the drivers side, hope this helps.

You may want to check on the shift rod bushing condition, mine was broken in 3 pieces Exclamation

Thanks MOCHABILL, KTphil and Erik G, I got a shift rod bushing and clip on the way along with a few other essential tune up goodies. Smile Shifter goes in Sunday.

She's running well, it's my girlfriends car that I've been enjoying while she gets her license and learns to drive stick. The buckpack short throw with T handle is a pain to learn with for her hence the stock shifter.

From what I understand it's been converted to a 32/36 DFEV Weber and the engine's rebuilt to 1644c (?) or so. Gas mileage isn't great so we're trying to do all the maintenance duties to bring that closer to the 26 miles per gallon mark so she can daily drive it w/o emptying the bank.

All in all fun car! Planning on a nice one-tone paint job (metallic satin burgundy or metallic satin army green) as we're getting a lot of attention from the wrong folk with the dodger blue paint scheme and lowered stance lol.

I also want to raise the rear a tad as the camber looks like it'll be going through tires pretty quick. The muffler scrapes a bit and I can't get it onto ramps! Looks pretty though but a just a tad higher, I think it'll still look good.

Bugpack not Buckpack I believe. Wink Strip the chrome/lights etc off it and take it to MAACO etc.

That's probably the worst carb you could put on a type3. If possible try and find a pair of Solex 32 PDSITs (try to get them with everything; manifolds, linkages, air cleaner, etc...). They came stock on type 3s up thru 67, and continued on for the rest of the world (not the USA, as we got FI). This should get you up to the 27-28 constantly mark, and give you back the flat floor above the engine (no hump-box like thing in the way). Wink

Noted. Thanks for the heads up, Bobnotch. Any particular reason it's so bad? Is it just too much carb for the application?

Shifter went in smoothly after we figured out where the spring went. Drives a lot better now and no more "double pump" into third. Something was interfering a smooth shift into 3rd since we got the car but now everything is good with 3rd Smile. It's till a little notchy all around, the shifter was the jbugs NOS shifter kit, I figure it will wear in a bit. It doesn't have that longer throw I was expecting from a stock shifter.

The bushing is on it's way out but I haven't recieved that piece yet so that will go in as soon as I get it, hopefully that will change the feel, I've read it's a night and day difference. The plastic knob that came with the kit has to go but everything else is fine. The rod is a little on the short side so I'm thinking a 2" extender and/or a longer shift knob will cure that.

Does the shift linkage have to be removed inorder to install the bushing correctly with the c clip or can that be done from inside the car as well?

EDIT: Nevermind, I found the thread I had up earlier. Looks like it would be easier if removed but apparently it's possible w/o removal. Wish me luck.

They are usually jetted all wrong for the application, not to mention eating into the rear trunk space. On a Fastback, or a Notch, this isn't that big a deal, but in a Squareback, it interferes with the reason for owning 1 (a large flat floor).

...and messes with the cooling of the engine since the carb is now sucking hot and dusty engine bay air at rest. Remember, unlike a Bug, the Type 3 engine bay is open to the elements underneath. That's why VW made all that plenum setup to get cool clean air from the sides into the carbs and fan intake.
