Hello

I have a 74 std with a stock DP 1600. The dist. is a stock svda and the carb looks to be a made in china 34 PICT 3. It has no other markings or numbers on it. The Problem is (well at least one of the problems) when I put the timing light on it the timing is not steady, at idle or at 3000+ RPM. It jumps back and forth a little. Bad distributor? I also noticed that when I have the vacuum line disconnected (while timing) there isn't much vacuum... If any. I could go on, but I will start here. Thanks in advance. This is a great place.

Confirm which distributor you are running. There should be numbers stamped on the body like this:

Try connecting the timing light near the #1 spark plug instead of the distributor cap end.
Some inductive clamps have an arrow which points towards the spark plug.

Check that the points are adjusted correctly and there is a grease on the distributor cam that the point rides on.

Thanks for the reply. I am connecting to timing light at the plug. I don't have points, I have a compu fire unit with coil. The dist. #'s that I can see are JFU 4 0231170034. I can't see beyond the VW symbol. Are those enough?

There were two distributors with this number:
    VW 043-905-205 (German)
    VW 043-905-205 ZB (Mexican)

Basically they are the same.

With electronic points your timing should be MORE consistent than mechanical points. Make sure the disc with the four magnets is firmly pressed down on the top of the cam.

Is the rotor loose? It should rotate clockwise and snap back into place. But it should NOT move front/back/left/right.
