Just because you can't imagine something doesn't mean it's not real.

Damn man, I told you I own one of these transaxles and it's in my garage. I'm not lying and I know what I'm talking about!

And of course there won't be an off the shelf solution for axles to adapt this trans to VW hubs, but I own a welder, so anything is possible.

And FYI, NAPA shows the right side axles are 17" longer for a stick than for an auto.

I stand corrected. Not that I was acting like I was right anyway. In that pic it still looks like there's half the case missing on the other side but that's just my auto-bias tricking me. Liar

Just for argument's sake, it seems like one side would still be pretty close to the wheel since you have the length of the engine to contend with on the other side.

BTW I hope you didn't think I was being a know-it-all, smarty pants. I just couldn't see why they'd have a 17" longer axle on one side. Seems like it'd cause an imbalance somewhere, but what do I know lol I over analyze things too much some times.

I'm sure people used to say "why don't you just drive a 63 beetle". At least an 04 cobalt makes 150hp and has a trans axle designed to hold it.

I can comment on the longevity on the Quad 4 engine. My father was a taxi driver in Aruba and he had a 1990 Oldsmobile Cutlass. He never replaced any internal engine parts. At 550,000 miles, the head gasket quit. We removed the heads and to our surprise the pistons and bores looked like they only had 50k miles on them. Had the head milled, put new gasket and off he went again. The tranny quit for the 3rd time around 600k and he retired the car. I do remember issues with the coil though, sounds like he had to replace it every 100k miles or so. The Quad was the only engine that came close of being as reliable as his other diesel cars (Nissan Laurel, Pathfinder, Landcruiser, Toyota Crown, Hyundai H1, etc Smile).

I am in the middle of an ecotec swap and am interested to know what thermostat you are using and what the fan temps are set at. Did you leave them stock or lower them?

I used a stock thermostat, as that is all I could find locally. I think it was only available in 180* or 185*.
I did lower the fan temps on the ECU. I think the fan comes on around 197, off at 192 or so.

Has anyone tried a mtx75 transaxle for a mid engine build? I've had it kicking around in my head for quite sometime. It's a light weight fwd or mid engine transaxle available with an LSD that puts up with 300-400 hp (in the old nobles). Cool build, I'll probably go water cooled once I need more power, but being as I'm a swing axle I'll probably wait till I swap or find a new pan.

Yes, I have saw ecotecs and quad 4s with dual webers off of a vw adapted to them. I don't know if someone makes the intake to do it or whether it was that persons custom job. They used the crank sensor for signal and two gm wasted spark coil packs. At that point you would have spent about the same amount of money and it wouldn't have quite the same power or drivability but it's ultimately about whether you are comfortable working on something carburated or fuel injected. Half the fun of my ecotec swap has been working through the little issues you get when putting a computer controlled, water cooled engine in an offroad car.

Did you brace the engine at all with the rear cage? Also, are you running stock rear arms or did you go longer and wider with them?
