|
Im new to the Baja / Buggy world. Have been dreaming of assembling a Baja or fiberglass buggy with more - than - stock suspensio : 10 to 12".
One question is, are there available the bent parts & pieces of roll cages, ready to be welded, or mostly complete welded cages - to fit the un cut VW pan & beetle body shape?
Advice appreciated
Thanks |

I know you can get a six point cage in two or three pieces.
Only way I know is that I have one don't need it, don't want it, lol, but I have it _________________ Rocco- my build thread

Might be a stupid question, yet going to ask it anyways..lol. Will the cage in that link strengthen the bug up if the unfortunate happens? I know it will help in a roll over, yet how about a collision? Or when landing after getting a bit of air when off-roading? Like MarkZee, I am also new to the bug world.
Thanks,
Matt |

this kit is designed to work with a 3" body lift. If you don't want the body lift you will have to cut the bottom off the upright hoops _________________ 73 Beetle, Ghia front brakes, Type 3 rear brakes, 1776, Solex 34 Pict-3, Bosch SVDA, '97 Mustang seats

it would be a start to a cage system. adding tubing to the front beam, diagonals/gussets and cross bracing and building your bumpers (front, rear and side) off the cage would up your odds in a major accident. .095 tubing is strong but some like the .120 around the driver area. take a look a the Huebbe's rally car build. i still don't think their car would like being T-boned by a early 70's land boat. http://www.huebberally.com/photos/album/07_19_2007/ _________________ 1972 vw hunting truggy

No, but any car from the 70s wouldn't fair much better. A modern car with crash structure in the doors, sills, and b-pillar might be just as good as my car with a roll cage.
Yet I don't fear getting tboned on a rally stage. I fear trees at 70mph.

i wasn't putting your car down but not too many cars are f-350 t-bone proof. thanks for ringing in. do you agree with starting with the class 11 cage kit and adding extra supports like you have for added protection during light to mild off roading? i know a lot will depend how good the welder is. _________________ 1972 vw hunting truggy

No I didn't take offense to your comment. I was just adding some info about my cage so people could see about tube diameter, thickness and general layout. _________________ 1970 Beetle - Rally car

Thanks for the replies. For the price of $220 for that cage, small price for a piece of mind that it might one day save me or the bug from serious damage. Also thanks for the pics Mark of where extra bracing can be placed for extra strength. Not planning on racing it, mainly playing around in the woods and stuff like that. Never know when ya hit something wrong and the bug wants to lay on its back.
Thanks,
