long story short. does the gas tank have to come out to replace the center tie rod?or can it be done through the steering box access panel in the trunk? should i use any assembly lube on the tie rod ends? _________________ 72 super beetle |

Neither, just get the ends off and wrestle it out.
The new center tie rod should come pre-greased. _________________ 69 Beetle - Daily driver

When I did mine I pulled the other tie rods out with it. It's a good opportunity to change out the other tie rod ends.
And when I did mine I had to use a tie rod end puller, never had to do that before. It was so stuck that when it finally gave it made a loud crack and sent my puller flying across the garage. There was just that much tension. _________________ 69 Beetle - Daily driver

I use AutoZone 25297 $15, or loaner tool on my tie rods. after borrowing it several times, I just bought one.
Leave the nut on a little as you do this, so the threaded rod cannot slip off. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. it started out a lowering project and has turned into a rebuild the front end project. couple the tie rod ends i thought where ok are not. the right center tie rod end i could shimmy shimmy shake shake is all over the place. rather than just ends i ordered new rods with ends and got a new center rod with ends from Topline. figured it is apart..might as well replace it all while there. no telling when or iff it had ever been done. it is my DD so better safe than sorry. only thing that hasnt been replaced is the steering box which seems to be in good working order. _________________ 72 super beetle |
