Does anyone know of a good VW tech around the piedmont of NC. Having trouble with a bird's nest of wiring on a 70 beetle.
Got everything working except turn signals.

That's real funny Jerry. Very Happy
I just try to be helpful where I can.

Biglum151, what model year is your Beetle and exactly what is it doing when you try to use your turn signals? Have you checked the fuses (gotta start with the basics).

With the Beetle turn signal circuit, I find it helpful to disconnect the turn indicator bulb circuit while troubleshooting. Just remove the bulb. Troubleshoot this part of the circuit last.

Speedy Jim has the best collection of simplified wiring diagrams for VWs. See this link for the turn signal circuits:
http://www.nls.net/mp/volks/htm/signals.htm
For the '70 Beetle you most likely want the second diagram for the 3-terminal flasher relay.

Ok I would start by making sure the ground wire at 31 is good and the ground at the bulbs -- often this seems to be a problem with vw's ground is usually brown wire

or take the drawings (speedy) or the ones above Technical + wiring ,type one
to any ASE shop.
I promise you, any shop ASE shop tech, can wire any car.. for sure....

VW never invented electrics, and could learn a few rules, their-selves.
like a fuse on the Ignition line . for one. (thermal braker upgrade...?_)

i you need a source to real VW circa type., AMP connectors.
the USA disty. Digikey.com stocks them, even the huge ones on the REG.

i hand crimp and solder mine, when done looks OG.
same stamp on backside as Day 1. AMP
i have the parts and pn. for these .

1970 Standard Beetle. Replaced broken turn signal switch, signals worked fine for about two weeks, then suddenly stopped working. Have checked all fuses, replaced flasher and hazard switch. Have also traced wiring according to diagrams I found on this site. Still no luck

It might be intermittent power to the flasher – Often I put 12 volts right there and then see if the flasher works and hand switch will work -- Ok go to the hazard switch and see if you have power – when the power is on check to see if you have power coming out of the flasher .

you need to say each time
the the blinks and emg. are dead or just blinks.?

they are related.
so....

the hazards work the easiest,
due to 4 bulb current flow, makes the flasher more happy
especially with bad grounds.

all you need is a volt meter. got VOLTS?

70s td is not rare, millions made
3 licks above page tabs lands me the ROAD MAP
do you have power at. E3, see below.

see E3 it is the emg. switch
see L and R, those wires drive the grounded lamp (emg drive to lamps)
see 31 that is ground. at E3
see 30 that must be hot all the time.
see 15 that pin is hot key one, 15 means ignition feed
J2 is the flasher.device. (cantankerous)

the flasher sends flashing power, via 49a, to the E3 or to the column blinker
so if 49a is dead, both features are dead. . if the lamps are all bad
or all the grounds on same , the flasher will be silent.

the flasher J2 gets its power from E3 called pin PLus +
if that pin is zero volts all the time the flasher will dead all the time.
so check 3 pins
all pins on E3 point 30 and 15 and +
all three will be hot , key on, and for sure erg. flasher on.

the goal is to get + pin hot then the flasher output hot (pulsing) on 49A
see?

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/1970_VW_Type_1_Poster.jpg

all the grounds at each lamp must be good.
if the ground to J2 is bad , J2 goes DEAD. totally.
so check that J2 ground is good, some are wired oddly. check carefully
see why ground is mandatory here

this makes it all more simple a unified drawing.
