I decided to drill and tap my oil galleys for the first time, man am I glad I did.

I got my case machining done at a reputable and widely used VW machine shop(totally not their fault). One item they did for me was repair my oil sending unit.

While cleaning the gallies after I drilled and tapped them, I ran across this little gem:

from the rear side of this hole:

and it appears to have come from here:

I am very glad I did this procedure and urge everyone else to do the same. This was my first time drilling and tapping a case and it was not hard at all, just had to pay attention.

Had I not done it this baby would have lodged itself somewhere awefull, ruining my new, soon to be enigne. And after melt down I probably would have never found it therefor never known what went wrong.

Pheeewwwww!

Glad you found it. What is "it"?

It looks to me like the end of an oil sending unit. It is threaded, the end looks blunt and I think its made of Al or whatever those are made of.

I recently disassembled a seized motor, looking for problems. Turns out the #4 main seized, but I chalked it up to low oil. I was gonna pull the plugs any ways, and I found that the #4 main oil restrictor was clogged with sludge. I will never rebuild engine with out doing this now.
