I decided to drill and tap my oil galleys for the first time, man am I glad I did.
I got my case machining done at a reputable and widely used VW machine shop(totally not their fault). One item they did for me was repair my oil sending unit.
While cleaning the gallies after I drilled and tapped them, I ran across this little gem:
from the rear side of this hole:
and it appears to have come from here:
I am very glad I did this procedure and urge everyone else to do the same. This was my first time drilling and tapping a case and it was not hard at all, just had to pay attention.
Had I not done it this baby would have lodged itself somewhere awefull, ruining my new, soon to be enigne. And after melt down I probably would have never found it therefor never known what went wrong.

Glad you found it. What is "it"? _________________ On a lifelong mission to prove (much to my wife's dismay) that Immaturity is Forever!! |

It looks to me like the end of an oil sending unit. It is threaded, the end looks blunt and I think its made of Al or whatever those are made of. |

I recently disassembled a seized motor, looking for problems. Turns out the #4 main seized, but I chalked it up to low oil. I was gonna pull the plugs any ways, and I found that the #4 main oil restrictor was clogged with sludge. I will never rebuild engine with out doing this now. _________________
