Well I did it yet again, I left my gas cap at a filling station.
Luckily I had two more so it is not a total disaster.
I always pick up Thing gas caps at VW show swappers, so I had a spare.
This is the question.
In the back of the gas cap there seems to be a black rubber seal. I see that in my twp remaining caps the seal is not good.
Can one replace the seal, or should I get a NOS gas cap?

I guess I am not worried about someone siphoning my gas. What I was pretending to do was: Put a small chain so that I can undo the gas cap, but it is still attached to the Thingster.

Sam, the locking cap is more for Your benefit than the theif!! You cannot remove the key from the cap, until it is installed on the Thing, SO....
AS mentioned, it's hard to drive away when your keys are still in the cap!

Good question on the seal. I need to replace the seal on my "new" (65 bug tank in Our Thing.)

A piece of braided (not laid) nylon cord works well for preventing the loss of a gas cap. Kind of difficult to figure out how to attach it to a Thing cap but it can be done. On the tank side, you can just use a one way expandable clip that fits down inside the filler pipe kind of like a lot of 2 cycle engine use.

Buy the good cap and not the cheaper alternative. The cheap locking caps are garbage.

Which are which? Or, for political correctness so not to offend any business, which one do you reccomend?

I paid through the nose (in my opinion) for mine and still think it is crappy. Mine is from TTS and when the tank is full, in a left hand turn it will leak out and run down the side of the body. The key hole cover flap was sharp enough it cut me the first time I used it. The only reason I bought it was a requirement for a indoor show I was in back in January.

The Thing Shop sells a counterfeit cap.

Get a genuine VW cap, they work perfectly as you would expect. Check the classifieds, there's one offered.
