|
|
Does anyone know how to find the engine size on a Fastback? I have a 1972 Type 3 Fastback. I've been googling like crazy and it kind of looks like maybe they're all 1600TL, but then again it's hard to tell from the search results. I have no idea what TL stands for either. Thank you! |

If it is stock, it is most likely a 1600 cc, the TL stands for Touring Limousine. _________________ Cancer, You have claimed another beautiful life, but You will be defeated....

Look in your VOLKSWAGEN SERVICE MANUAL Type 3 1968 through 1973 by Bentley since you will Need this manual! It is 1584cc, but called a 1600. _________________ http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/mr_bojangles500/

| It's all original. The only things on it that aren't stock are the shifter (replaced with a trigger shifter, but I was given the old shifter in case I wanted to change back) and it has Porsche rims. I bought it from someone who is very knowledgeable about older VW's and he checked all the #'s on the car and everything matches. |

"Touring Limousine"
Yes. The German word for sedan is Limousine. Has nothing to do with our English translation, usually implying a long, 4-door sedan. Brits call this type automobile a saloon. And no swinging doors on it...
The "E" in TLE stands for the German word for (fuel) injection- Einspritzung.
Actually, all Fastbacks since day 1 were 1600cc (OK, 1584cc). From '66 thru '67 they had dual carburetors. For the US market starting with the '68 model year, VW went to fuel injection which they kept thru end of production in 1973. The same "basic" engine longblock was utilized on the Beetle and Ghia from 1971 on, but had the upright fan shroud cooling system. |

unless you got a super-rare 1600TA, wich is a fastback with sparse interior and a sidedraft 1500cc engine, they do exist, very rare in Europe, probably non-existant in the US

The USA got the most expensive (fully loaded or top of the line) version of the t-3 line, with the sunroof being the only real "factory option". Yes, you could get a radio, radial tires (with or without a white stripe), floor mats and the like, but those were "dealer options", that were installed at the dealership. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
