Also look at the warranty from Sears. 4-year free replacement and 100 month pro-rated. You can't beat it.
...
Don't just take my word for it. Google die hard platinum and odyssey battery and you'll find that they're very well regarded in commercial and automotive enthusiast cultures.

My concern was that you can never be 100% sure that a DieHard is an Odyssey (if Sears ever changes their supplier), and this thread mostly had P-2 specs in it so far.

That said, my concerns are alleviated, because I took your advice and read this page:
http://www.sears.com/diehard-platinum-automotive-battery-group-size-65-price/p-02850065000P, where the battery is stated as "Deep Cycle" (if you can believe them).

I'm still curious why BillM installed his with posts up (resulting in mods to the battery cover)

I think the swivel base interferes with side mounting. Also, the existing battery cables might not reach when side mounting.

Go get one and give it a shot. Take pics and report back. It's Sears so you can probably return it if you're not happy.

Will probably do so next summer. I'm not on-hand at the moment, and am having my mechanic just put in something cheap and easy initially to keep my stereo/lights working on aux. If I was there, I'd probably prefer to just find two matched batteries that'll fit and do things that way.

I'll replace the cheapie with a dual-batt install next summer, probably around the same time as solar and 12V fridge :p

Thanks for all the input. I went this way too.

Have the P2 under the driver seat, no issues with rotating the seat and the battery door closes just fine.

I have locking RMW storage drawers installed in the front of both seat
pedestals. It is in the way when trying to lay the battery down. It
was easier to notch to battery door then try to modify the storage
drawer. With the carpet down its hardly noticeable. The storage
drawes are great for locking my guns, wallets, medications, etc
up when camping.
I plan to do a little work on my dc electrics soon. Want to install
a switch panel. That way I can just flip a switch to turn off the USB
outlets, night lite in poptop, fridge, and one to control the yandina.
Pulling fuses has gotten old and I really don't want to wear out
their position in my aux fuse box.
I am also considering how, where, and with what , some sort of
shut off between batteries and alternator. I would like to fuse
the entire system at both batteries. I worry about electrical
issues and fire as lots of modification have been done to my Westy.
I am also considering what I should replace the Promariner Marine
charger with. It's a few years old (I got it before GoWesty) started
selling them. I want something that will charge both batteries and
tolerate supplying 12v to run lights etc when batteries are low.
Last is wondering if I replacing my main battery with an
AGM battery instead of the Lead battery will simplify my charging
needs.
Perhaps a schematic will make things easier for all of us. I will make
one and post it up today.

I'm surprised to see this in a van with swivel seats. I picked up a P2 for my 1984 full camper and there was no way that I could have fit it on its side without trimming big chunks of the swivel plate.

I really like this set up too. It appears the minimal mods were moving the relay under the swivel seat area and cutting off small sections of either end of the battery hold-down.

What I want to know is specifically where is the relay mounted and how did you get the isolator, etc. mounted under the swivel base, as it appears they are screwed down from the top?

Peet, I think there are two versions of the swivel seat. Early and late. My 82 it barely fit the UB batteries. I have since removed the swivel for more head and leg room and that really opens up the battery box area. What is the available amps on this battery? Also is it a deep cycle type?

This seems like a good battery. Any problems with this Diehard P2?

Thx!!!

=================
Repeating some P2 info here for those whose eyes are bleeding:

Group 65 DieHard P2
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02850065000P?prdNo=4&blockNo=4&blockType=G4

- Fits laid on its side in some battery boxes (newer vanagons?) if you move the relays out of the battery box
- 75 Ah capacity
- AGM Absorbed Glass Mat construction
- ~$229 cost
- Sears calls it a "deep cycle battery"

A post above (pg 4) of this thread has some great pics showing installation ( http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6709847#6709847 )

I just purchased and installed this battery vertically. Pursuant to the above cited post and IMHO more elegant solution photodocumented by jasknucklehead, I will be breaking out my angle grinder and laying that bad boy on its side. That is the extent of modifications I am willing to perform on my DS battery box.

Pics to follow.

SEARS has their $229.99 PLATINUM series batteries on sale today only for $183.99. Online purchase, pickup in store.

Best deal I have found on Odyssey Grp 65 is $247, but they do have a 60 month warranty, Sears version is 48 months.

Search on Sears website does not return a listing of this battery. Tried stuff like: Diehard 65 battery & Diehard platinum

They do have the "Diehard advanced GOLD 65", but the "Dihard advanced PLATINUM 65" has disappeared.

It should work unless it restricted by state for some corporate reason.

Give this link a TRY: http://www.sears.com/search=car%20battery%20prices..._Batteries

If that doesn't work: go to Sears Automotive > then to auto battery > then check 48 month. It should show you Groups, 65, 35 and 34/78 in the Platinum series.

interesting to see if this could fit in the battery box, with the P2 or Odyssey

http://www.4wheelparts.com/Electrical/Odyssey-PC-1...7AodCTgANg

would require post to stick up, it would seem.
it's already pretty snug in there, but just an idea.
probably not for those wanting the battery on its side.

Deadset, you RULE!
Just ordered a Diehard Platinum Group 65 deep cycle battery (for pickup at a nearby Sears Auto center). It was $229-$46 = $183 (+tx)

I am not the expert on this battery. I don't know the answer to your question. But to fit it under the driver seat (as a house battery) you have to cut off the terminals and lay it on its side.

Cutting off the terminals is (probably) OK for a house battery but not advisable for a starter battery.
