Will this battery also fit under the passenger seat? |
I am not the expert on this battery. I don't know the answer to your question. But to fit it under the driver seat (as a house battery) you have to cut off the terminals and lay it on its side.
Cutting off the terminals is (probably) OK for a house battery but not advisable for a starter battery. |
I have yet to slip mine in. And I will report back.
But after reading everything I could find on the various threads, I though this battery fit in, just fine, on its side, without any modifications?
Or, could fit standing up, with a minor cut into the battery cover?
I guess I will find out. _________________ ----------------------------------------------------

I have one as a starter battery on passenger side mounted normally (vertical). The only mod I made was that the lid needs to bulge out a little to clear the terminal. I did that with a rubber hammer. I placed a piece of plastic between the box lid and terminal for insulation. It's tight getting it in and out but it fits. _________________ 89' Dove Blue Syncro Hightop |

Thats awesome! I think I'd glue the plastic insulation to the steel lid! _________________

Indeed... Looks great...
I just ordered another from Sears.
I'll get one on both sides.
All the chargers seem to want similar age/size/capacity batteries in the "banks" for best operation.
Now I can start my solar/aux set-up with two fresh AGMs...
Next stop... shopping for panels, converters, wired, etc... _________________ ----------------------------------------------------

One of my favorite companies.
They have been backing me and many of the vehicles I maintain for over 10 years.
Custom sizes are available.
The batteries I am using in a Syncro are for endurance racing, built for use in Daytona prototype chassies and offer far more juice than the retail versions.
Yes they are carbon fiber
Price and availability will deter most.
I am purely posting the link to the Braille site so interested parties can see options of smaller, very well built units.
I do not use these as house batteries, nor do I mount my house batteries in the stock locations. |
It would seem this one would fit.
It is smaller and lighter than the Odyssey/Sears option?
And still has 75aH.
But it is 2x the cost.

Or how about putting almost 200aH under the driver's seat: http://www.braillebattery.com/index.php/braille/product_batteries/im65d _________________ ----------------------------------------------------

So with the Diehard P-2 what do people have for the rest of their set-up (combiner, charger, inverter, etc) or would want for their ideal set-up? I'm gonna install mine soon and will have to get everything for it and my mind is starting to go numb from looking at all the different brands/types. This is all new to me, so I just want to make sure I get things right.
I am planning on doing something like the GoWesty aux setup, but replacing the isolator with a yandina 100 combiner (it seems like most people agree having a combiner is better than an isolator), replacing all the wiring with 6 gauge (10 for going to dash). I haven't really pinned down a charger yet, I saw someone suggest the charger sears sells (http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02871227000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=G1) which is specific to the platinum batteries, but it doesn't have the best reviews. Also, not sure what I want for the inverter, something in the upper hundreds for watts, any suggestions?
Also, i saw suggestions of putting an inline fuse going from the starter battery to the relay and also putting in a fuse between the aux to the combiner/isolator, any thoughts?
Basically just wondering what people have for their complete set up.
Thanks for any help, I know there are lots of posts on this, but most are at least a few years old, so I just wanted update info. |

Thanks for the info, I like the idea of being able to put what gauge wire you want into the blue sea. |

I had a problem with my two Sears Diehard group 65 P2's recently (installed under the front seats with a Yandina combiner). I had the transmission rebuilt over Christmas with the result that the van was off the road for over 4 months. Parasitic load completely drained the batteries during that time. I had some trouble charging them back up with my 10amp charger/maintainer. The red charging light was still on after 3 days of charging. Then when they seemed to be charged (>12.8v) they were discharging in just a few days with almost no use. So I figured I would exchange them under warranty at Sears. However, when they did a load test the batteries did great so they would not replace them.
This weekend I did a 5 hour drive from Portland up to Moses Lake in Washington. After 3 hours I noticed a nasty rotten egg smell, I drove on thinking that it was industrial pollution until I realized that the smell was inside! When I stopped I could hear one of the batteries sizzling, it was already bulging and leaking acid into the battery box. The other battery was not leaking but was way too hot to touch.
I took them back to Sears again today and after a little discussion they agreed to replace them both. I still have no idea what went wrong with the batteries but at least I now have 2 brand new batteries under the Sears 4 year warranty program . Any ideas? _________________ 87 Syncro Hightop Camper

I have an 1982 Diesel Westfalia, that I'm planning on putting Odyssey 1750's in the cubbys.

Thanks for all the input. I went this way too.
Have the P2 under the driver seat, no issues with rotating the seat and the battery door closes just fine.

Are you using this battery in a Westfalia or a regular van in the battery compartments?

Lifeline is perhaps the first step down from what most consider the best available - the Rolls Surrette batteries - followed by Trojan. Reserve capacity and cranking amps are mostly immaterial in choosing a true deep cycle battery. The GPL-27T I am using is 100 a/h and will fit, length and width wise, in the stock, unmodified box. Deepening or lengthening the box to retain a stock appearance is important to me. The 'NC-27' battery you refer to is an inexpensive Exide product and 'dual-purpose', i.e. not a true HD deep cycle.
Regarding charging: the link provided above seems to relate to small-amperage chargers designed primarily to charge small batteries.
Xantrex makes several charge regulators for alternators:
http://xantrex.com/power-products/power-accessories/alternator-regulator.aspx
I plan to add one of these to my rig, since I'll be using two identical GPL-27 batteries for storage (200a/h). Connecting this is a little more difficult with a Bosch alternator but can be done. Also, there will be an on-board charger (most likely an Iota) for the times when I have access to 110V power and want to top off the batteries. |
