Except it looks like you pitched your camp on the centerline of a mountain road curve in the first pic? Heh...

I almost stayed there a few days ago. But it was too hot so we blasted down to the sequioas. Looks like a sweet place though, we might be back in a couple of weeks.

It may look like a road course but it's the old parking lot of the ski bowl
That is gone. You can't beat the view and it is by far the best place we have stayed on this road trip

I lived in Ashland Oregon for years, I'm familiar with the area.

There are actually a lot of paved abandoned highways out that way.
A newer "better" road was constructed and the old right of way was simply abandoned. You can usually still access it and motor upon it being careful fir missing bridges and such!

Hwy 99 over Siskiyou Pass springs immediately to mind and has just such a highway as do areas of the Northern California coast.

Abandoned, quiet, paved........
But...... The Native people named the Siskiyou's for what they are.... "Moving mountain" which means the surface is constantly in motion creating slides and fissures along the Highway. I-5 over the pass is frequently being repaired for such issues.
On the old abandoned roads this is clearly visible as fissures open, some quite large!

How are you keeping your hatch lid up with the bikes attached? I can't see a support pole or anything ~ are your struts doing the job??

Just a little peice if 1/2 conduit is holding up the hatch. I'm working on a Syncro project that the ladder and racks are probably going to. When that happens I'll upgrade the struts on that vehicle. Lifting the hatch now us not for the faint of heart
