Just wanted to share this for anyone considering pressing their own balljoints.

The last set I had pressed was done by a friendly local shop and unfortunately the job didn't go to plan and involved having to later buy an extra new joint.

Having watched the process done and researched it since,I decided to make my own press from bits of material I had lying around and a new 20 ton bottle jack. Made it small enough to bench mount and pretty sure it'll come in handy for other jobs.

So far so good. Did a set of four with no problems once I got the scaffold pipe diameters right. You'll see that the top pipe is jubilee clipped together. This is because I had to cut a 10mm slice out of it and squash it down to a smaller size. After a bit of careful rounding up in a vice, it's now a nice fit on the balljoint lip around the rubber boot.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jonny.

I forgot to mention it but the bit of pipe pictured on the bench is for presing old ones out. Took a little time to file the ends square but got there. Smile

With welds like that Id bolt everything too...aint much for using a square either huh Laughing ...dont get mad Im just kidding, your press is effective,my only concern would be to take some time building the tools,I dont imagine conduit amd hose clamps will last too long.

Conduit? Rolling Eyes

I didn't weld that scaffold tube cos its galvanised and I didn't fancy getting poisoned. Take your point though and I'll get it chamber welded at work sometime.

Cheers

only teasing,ya took some time and made a nice tool, good for you.if you do weld the galvanized use 6011 rod,or grind it off first.it takes quite a bit of fume exposure to get poisoned, but if you do drink plenty of milk,it works wonders.

Just don't breath while you are welding.

Sanding or grinding off the galvanizing will help. It also will help give you a better weld.
