| So I bit the bullet and had a high end reputable builder build me new 2110 with all the bells and whistles. While I don't want to mention the builder at this point (not gex), I am very pleased with the build sheet, components used, and the builder for the most part. However, the engine is sitting in my garage waiting for a couple of more pieces to show up before I install it. One of these pieces required that I remove the shroud to install and while loosening the alternator nut I noticed a slight clunk sound. This was the crank moving which I am also OK with being that it is normal. This led me to slap my dial indicator on it and check end play. Turns out it is right at .006, the max limit by the book. What would you do? I am not local to the builder in any sense of the term and shipping it back is not gonna happen. Would you run it or pull the flywheel and reshim? It has been dyno tuned and broken in already. Am I being too picky? Suggestions? I keep trying to shut out that little voice that says I told you to do it yourself! |

I say pull the flywheel and make sure its not the bearing moving.
Then I would put the proper shims in there and forget it. |

run it
If you want to be anal you can take the flywheel off and make it .0015 tighter, but I don't think there will be any benefit besides the placebo effect |

| it's hard to put an actual value on the placebo effect. in other words, it does have value. |

.006" is the upper limit of normal set up for a fresh engine, not the max wear tolerance for end play which is even greater.
Run it at .006", I set them all up at .005" and for good reason, a little loose is better than a little tight.. Well at least for this application anyway. _________________ www.srpengines.com

Since it's a 2110 cc, the builder may have preferred the 0.006" end float. It's common to use 0.005-0.006" on some hi-po engines.
The wear limit according to VWAG is 0.008". _________________ Neil.

Contact the builder and ask for advice. No one knows the engine the way he does and some things are done for a purpose that isn't explained and may not make sense to others. _________________ Jake Raby

| Thanks Jake, I'll do as you suggest. I had another child start college or otherwise it would have been one of your type 4 engines. I've been following the progress on the synch link for a long time now and am glad to see it's now available. Trying to find the justification to purchase one however is eluding me. Perhaps my next upgrade. |
