I was wondering what the running temputure for a ghia? I was thinking about adding a oil temp guage to keep an eye on the engine temp. Would be helpful for those hot cruise days on Woodward. |

It can't hurt. Just check the gauge for accuracy, mine reads 40* higher than actual. _________________ Glenn

You should watch for abnormality or trends, rather than absolute numbers. Depending upon which sensor location you choose, the absolute temp will vary, as well as variations in the sensor, gauge and wiring connections.
Once you know what "normal" looks like, then you can tell if it is overheating. Having said that, 150C (302F) is the maximum temperature oil is tested during certification, other than flash point, in the High Temperature High Shear viscosity test. A safe limit at the bottom of the sump is a lot lower than that, maybe 120-125C (248-257F). Opinions will vary and VW never equipped production cars with a gauge so there is no owners manual number to use. Many air cooled aircraft engines have an oil temperature redline in that range, so that is what i'll use. |
