For a sleeper appearence.

How bad would it supress performance? Say if it had 125 HP at the crank with a tuned exhaust, what would the stock 1600 exhaust knock it down to?

Opinions welcome, and if anyone with any type of hot engine has done this, I'd like to know what the results are.

The exhaust would self limit your performance in terms of max RPM and power output. To what degree; that would have to be tested.
If I were to guess I would think it would limit to about 75-80 HP; Tops.
Your next concern will be overheating the heads and exhaust valves; as well as your MPG would be terrible.
Take a look at http://store.vintagespeed.com.tw/index.php?option=...;Itemid=80

If you want a performance engine with stock'ish appearance.

Forgive my ignorance, but I would think that the head sizes would matter more to the problems a stock exhaust would cause than the motor size. Obviously you want an exhaust that works with your system but as far as over heating goes if you run a stock head on that 2110 it's not going to be the problem running 42mm heads is going to give you. Is that completely off base?

You're right; to be making 125hp in any motor (large or small) will take more than stock heads, which requires the right intake, and to get it all out takes the right exhaust. Putting a stock exhaust on any motor making 125hp will choke the thing and make it run hot because what's happening in the combustion chamber can't get out fast enough.

I have a result. I was experimenting with different exaust systems I have. I once had a relativaly stock 1600cc dual port engine. I put on a GT4 tip sports exaust just for the looks. http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ACC%2DD%2D2070
Then went with the 2 tip header exaust http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ACC%2D35067
This one worked awsome on the 1600cc.
Then last year I built a 2161cc (steve timms stg2, dual dellorto 40's, 120 cam etc. I have a 1 5/8 ceramic merged header with magna flow muffler. Just for fun I tried the GT 4 tip exaust on it. this motor ran horrible. would only rev to about 4500rpm. I couldn't even spin the tires. you could feel the restriction with this exaust. (keep in mind I can rev this motor to 7000rpm with other exaust on it) Don't waist time trying this, It was 30 mins. of my life waisted I can't get back. Also keep in mind that the stock exhaust on stock motors are even a big restriction.
I would also like to add. beetles look like sleepers anyways. at least in my town. A lot of people pull up next to me and laugh because its loud and I have a different looking exhaust than normal. then when the light turns green im shifting into 2nd and doing 110kmh before they are even through the intersection. Who's laughin now! im canadian, I speak in kmh.

Message received. I'll never entertain this thought again. Especialy what with the heat problem. Egads.

Tip of the hat to Patrick for the real world example.
