Maybe I put this in the wrong catagory.
I got a 1985 VW Golf Diesel recently. The owners manual and the Bently factory repair manual both say to use "API Service CC or CD" engine oil. According to http://oilspecifications.org/api_eolcs.php these specifications are obsolete. I don't know if I've ever seen any oil like that so I looked for another.
So I saw some oil called Motul, made in France. It's 100% synthetic and says that it is good for VW specifications 505.01, 502.00, and 505.00. According to http://www.oilspecifications.org/volkswagen.php these specifications were introduced in the mid 1990's and 505.00 oil is for a naturally aspirated VW diesel engines just like mine.
So what thoughts are there about this oil? Is it a good substitute?
P.S. I already bought 5 liters of 5W40 of this same Motul oil. I guess I'll use it if no one posts any horror stories about this oil. Also my engine doesn't leak a bit so I'm not afraid of synthetic. I also live where it gets to -40F (-40C) durring the winter. _________________ If a water cooled engine cools its water with air, isn't it just an overcomplicated air cooled engine? |

If you're asking about oil for your Golf, you're in the wrong place.
Otherwise, ask your question here:

I can't speak for it in VW but I ran Motul in all my race bikes for years. Again different animal but the 2 stroke oil was the best/cleanest burning with the least wear that I ever ran.
The 4 stroke motor oil for the bikes has proven itself to me as well. |

Motul makes high quality oils. That said, we had problems with their 300V racing oil in our Volvo 240 Turbo. All solved by changing to Mobil1.
Probably just a case of wrong oil for the job. Too high viscosity in this case. |
