Yea, that hose was tougher than a hunk of an 8 ply steel belted radial tire. Hope you can find where to get one that is suitable.

BTW that is one awesome condition bus. Some of the areas where you would expect to see normal wear and tear, dings and scrapes, look close to showroom fresh. Please keep me updated--

EDIT- Fabulous Westy Guy might have a real good point on the fill elbow. Yours is new but it seems like it may be way to flimsy for the job. If the steel tube was securely positioned and restrained (which it isn't) the elbow might be OK but it sure could'nt survive with any pushing and pulling forces on it.


What's the diameter on the fill hose? Never measured it but don't imagine it'd be too hard to find some hose / pipe that would do the job. The stuff I'm using as coolant hose is about 1.5" ID, sems impervious to everything, is rubber with steel belting layer and wrapped with I guess a rubberized cloth layer. I think it's an industrial hydraulic / oil hose.

Here's the deal Rat. The hose is used for Gasoline. We all read here all the time about fuel lines. How they don't last and need to be changed all the time. Some every year or couple years. German braided hose doesn't hold up to our new gas and many available fuel hoses don't either. It's all about the materials used in the hose construction. All the discussions about various hose specifications, suppliers, how quick they fail, and the need for suitable fuel lines has gotten real commonplace.
The difference is that fuel lines are quick and easy to replace. I don't know how many times I've had to change mine. But the hose connector on the tank fill tube is a real rough one to deal with. Bob rightfully want's to do it once and then not be bothered again and not periodically tearing the engine and engine compartment apart and lowering the engine.
What would be cool is if someone has a specific brand and manufactures part number intended for this gasoline application.

No need for clamps on that piece of hose. There is no pressure in that evap line. The only time you'd actually see fuel from there is if you happen to overfill the tank. Volkswagen did not clamp any of the evaporative fuel lines including those behind the firewall with exception of the elbow off the top of the tank.

Thanks to all for their input...called Walter at Busboys this am...and he gave me the CORRECT part number for the formed hose at NAPA for a '78...#NBH1056. This is a 2 1/4" (or close o 60 mm ID hose), is flexible, and the angle is correct, can cut to fit, and should be able to make this work OK....does not have steel reinforcement either...go to their website and take a look....will get back to you AFTER we get it installed, with some tips that we will learn along the way....

It's available in either 45 or 90 bend. Anybody see a problem with this as a solution?


i recently used this hose to replace mine, it was a real bitch to install but it did work.

busboss..thank you for the thread...and would use your solution, except our '78 has the long metal tube and the short hose...I made a template of the existing hose vs the new hose, and if cut correctly, it should work. Last weekend bought the hard reinforced stuff that you are using on your application ..and although it won't work for our '78, should last you forever! Anybody else used the NAPA hose with the part number I supplied with success?

Desertbusman..the filler grommet IS from busboys! And is the best you can buy.. Check my other posts...looks like we may have a formed rubber hose that will work with some trimmimg according to a template I made. If this does not work, the Mercedes Sprint hose is available from CA in 2-3 days for $17.00, and definately works....but I think we will get the new hose to work....angle of the bend is very close,and it is flexible! Thank you for your kind words about our bus Ladybug..she is getting better every day....mail me back, or call me on my cell so we can talk about getting together this coming weekend, and where you would like to go to dinner! bob

Just ordered the Mercedes Sprint fuel hose from the dealership in Arrowhead..$17.00, no freight, coming from CA, will be here tomorow morning..part number is 901 476 0026. This hopefully should solve 2 problems 1. This hose has been used succesfully...2. It is for current fuels, so should last for a long time. It is pre-formed, and has a flexible "bladder" in the middle, so should be able to get the correct angle, and not put too much stress at the elbow on the filler neck. Which brings up another question...is there any sort of support device that was originally installed at the factory to support the pipe near the filler neck? The elbow seems a bit "flimsy" thin walled, and I would suspect, easy to stress..we had popped out the metal plug that allows access to the clamp screw, and there was a small 3/4" plastic plus near it that we popped off, but could find no purpose for the plug as there was nothing behind it....

Bob, how wide is the slot for the 'puter? 2-1/4+" to pull the steel tube out? Maybe there is some evidence on the tube where some sort of clamp or restraint was located.
Any stress on the tube and it will be pulling on the rubber boot at the fill opening. Actually, maybe everytime you gas up the pump nozzle probably shoves or bangs on that tube. The rubber connector at the tank isn't rigid enough to wonderfully hold the steel tube in the optimum position. At least that's how it appears.
Maybe someone, Bus Daddy?, has input from their experience and wisdom Wink .

I found that if you lube up the filler grommet really well, and the rubber hose to the tank, you should be able to twist the metal pipe and find the sweet spot where it does not apply any lateral torque on the filler grommet / neck or the connector hose. Once you find that spot, put on the clamps and be done. I used Scott's straight hose; works fine. No need for a bendy hose.

Mike, The opening for the filler is 2 1/4"...picked up the mercedes hose this afternoon, and the ID is the same as the original hose..and it is a "little" shorter as was specified in the German fellow's post from a couple of years
ago...it is flexible, not reinforced, and should be flexible enough if we need..I believe that we already have the elbow hose positioned correctly...and on the tube 100% which may have been part of the earlier problem (previous install)...either way, we have 2 different hoses now....let me know what your schedule is for this weekend...I will start early Saturday AM and get the other hoses on, and get the tank area cleaned up and ready...Bob

Westfabulous, yes it has! Can't believe what a project this has turned into! Never thought it would be so complicated...by the way, what did you use to lube up the hoses? Thank you for your advice...really hope that the Mercedes hose works, so bus owners have another source for the hose that has up to date rubber compound..Bob BTW...it was only $13.00, overnight shipping at NO charge!

What? Strictly for mechanical purposes, and all that, ahem. First it was her oven, now this. She's really gonna kill me now!

I've since taken mine apart again, as I've decided to scuff and paint the tank before sealing it all away behind the firewall. I found that the KY worked quite well for tweaking the metal pipe. Maybe I got lucky, but there was no pulling on the filler grommet when I found the right angle of the dangle.
