I'll throw it back on top of the engine for good measure then.. really it had like axle grease on it.. random

sounds silly but post a photo of it next to something of known size like a quarter etc.

just my two cents... only because batteries are my business...
if it's not cranking only when it's cold, then it's a battery that's going bad. every battery has a consumer date code on it somewhere. depending on who makes it, the code could be different too. so look for something like C4 (which could be from march of 2004). an average battery will last 5-7 yrs. heat is the #1 killer and will shorten the life even more... hope that helps...

If your ignition system is getting weak, it will be hard to get a good spark when the battery voltage is low. The ECU also needs sufficient voltage to work well.

Check that your points are in good condition and properly adjusted.

How old is your coil? Have you checked it according to the book? Even if it checks out good if you aren't getting a spark when cold, the coil would be suspect.

Check and if necessary clean all your FI connections, pay special attention to the grounds.

Check the resistance of the TTS to ground when the engine is cold. One terminal should read a few ohms of resistance and the other should be close ~0 ohms..

Battery is for sure less than two years old. At oldest it would be July 10, sorry I forgot to check it. I'll get a pic of the bolt but won't be able to post it til I get back Sunday. Coil is also less than two years old. I haven't tested it in quite a while.

Will know in an hour if its the battery connection... Here goes nothin...

Check your battery with a voltage tester. Anything under 12.4 v is an obviously faulty battery.

As far as girls with bays go... I thought you all knew me by now. The old timers do I guess. I come and go. Sometimes I'm in the bay forum, other times its beetles or type 3s or vanagons. It just depends on what the flavor of the week is. I eliminated my cars in my Sig line long ago as I was told way back when that it was too long. I do all my work myself except paint and body, and I am two for two at getting screwed over with that, so I'm going to have to come up with some time somewhere to fit that in my schedule.

Hi VW Girl, Memeber June 03,2003. That's neat, long time Member. Sounds like you may have a parasitic draw (something draining the battery) You need to give some battery voltage readings. Take a reading first thing when you park it for the night, record reading. In the morning take reading and record. If you have someone that can help. Take a reading in the morning while someone cranks the engine. Good Luck

if it was a parasitic draw, it would not start later in the day either, so i think that one can be ruled out, although, doing said test is not a bad way to find out where some of the problem is at.

well, bus started up this afternoon to drive home... not that it was cold, but she drives so nice I thought I would share. No trophies to be won, but she's still my bus and that's all that matters... idk why i didn't take more pics this weekend, always seems to be the case.

This is my bus next to my notch

Hi VWGirl, just wondered if you had resolved your problem because I'm having the exact same trouble with my 1500 Beetle and have been for ages. If you've fixed it I'd love to know how. Thanks.

Welcome, you do realise this thread is discussing a late bus with L-jetronic fuel injection, right? Unless your bug is injected it likely won't help much, apples VS: oranges.

Please describe the exact symptoms you are experiencing.
