Opionion needed: Should I change to electronic distributor?

Got a 69 with an 009 currently and am fixing it up as a surprise for my son who gets back from overseas in June. Not an expert but slowly learning. Would changing to an electronic distributor make much of a difference in performance and gas mileage? Do I need to get an entirely new distributor or would the electronic module be the way to go?
