|
|
I redid my whole brake system during my rebuild except my Master Cylinder. Discs all the way around. Ran it for about 500 miles without an issue. Stored it for the winter in my heated shop and then took it for a quick drive up the hill and back. While rolling around under the car I noticed my nicely por 15'd support brace had some fluid on it and was peeling off. Figured it was brake fluid so pulled the tank and yes it was brake fluid. Looks like the m\c is leaking from the top where the line goes in from the res. I also checked at the brake pedal and noticed some fluid there as well. Squeezed the rubber grommet and it sprayed out some fluid. So, new M/C?. Read on a search that the rebuild kits weren't worth the trouble. Do I need to get a different M/C for 4 wheel disc brakes?
How about this one?

Any input is appreciated.

Since the EXACT same thing happened to me (storage, ruined undercarrige detailing) I'd say the MC failed, and every time you stepped on the pedal it happily sprayed paint remover, I mean, brake fluid.
I replaced it with the same MC, and lived happily ever after |

Hey guys,
I am redoing my whole pan and will be doing an overhaul on the entire brake system and want to replace the mc while I'm at it. I understand the "you get what you pay for" principle, but what actually separates this mc and the one offered by ThingsUnlimited? I don't want to have to redo this for a while and want to make sure I get the best parts without getting swindled either.

There is no information about the manufacturer. That seems cheap for a MC. Its probably made in Brasil or China. If so it won't last. _________________ 1971 Ghia Convertible Autostick

Nothing wrong with calling supplier up and just asking manufacturer origin. Helps to let them know we won't put up with cheap non-quality parts. _________________ 74 VW Thing - Walküre

As I understand it, the Ghias that came with front disc brakes had residual pressure valves for the front brakes. I'm not sure if they were part of the MC or not, but I don't think they were. I haven't been able to find a part # for it and the parts guys I've spoken with don't know about it.
It's useful to keep gentle pressure on the discs to hold them close to the rotors when the wheels flex. I notice it most on rough roads or for very long highway stints where I don't tap the brakes for a time - the first press will catch VERY low (sometimes to the floor!) then the second will be normal. Aftermarket residual pressure valves are a bit on the pricey side, and of course you need more than one.
Beyond that, yeah, you get what you pay for. Don't go cheap on brake parts, that's the stuff that keeps you alive! _________________ VW-181 shirts and stickers.
