|
|
| I feel dumb asking this because I have always had a fuel filter in my engine compartment (before relocation), but with my '76 fuel injected engine I can't find the filter. Is it under the car? I can't seem to find it in the engine compartment or under the front hood. Please try not to flame me too hard. Thanks! |

On my '77 it's attached to the fuel pump, located under the tank by the right wheel housing. _________________ 70 & 77 Bugs, 71 & 72 Supers |

VW never actually installed a see through filter near the engine. The factory filters were installed right after the fuel tank and generally were replaced a long time ago. There's also a filter "sock" inside the fuel tank. _________________ PNW Dub Folk & Kitsap dub Folk (KdF)

It was only fuel injected bugs and 73 onwards supers that ran inline filters under the tank from the factory.
Before that they just relied on the sock filter in the tank over the pick up and gauze mesh filter inside the fuel pump.
In most cases though, 4 decades worth of POs have fitted inline filters in all sorts of stupid places. |

ya probably do not have one -- ditch the mechanical and run one on the driver side with an electrical pump

Jerry, it's a fuel injected bug, it's not gonna have a mechanical pump.
Anyway even if it were carbed fitting an electric pump is just stupid, they cause more problems than they fix. |

Thanks All! I found it right where you said it would be, behind the front passenger tire. Swapped it last night and feels a bit better today. Thanks again. Quick note... make sure you pinch the hose from the tank as it is gravity fed and will continue to flow when you disconnect the filter. Ask me how I know

Okay, so after the fuel filter change, it felt like the bug was running a little smoother. However, after work I fired it up to a nice backfire and then it wouldn't idle. I drove it home nursing the gas to keep it running and having it die multiple times on the way home. Is this a result of the filter being changed? Is the fuel injection computer confused (is that even possible?). Please help. _________________ Matt

I really suggest getting the orange bentley, it will help with the fuel injection issues
without knowing more I would say it is running lean, which means a possible air leak after the airflow sensor?
did it have problems before replacing the fuel filter? |

It would die once in a long while, but never like this. It literally will not idle at all. _________________ Matt

Might have more rust goodies in the tank and it has clogged your new filter. I mean if it worked temporarily then maybe there is a problem right there
Is there any way that you can eliminate the gas tank and see how it runs just off of a gas in a can
Could be pretty dangerous but if you can pull it off - it might tell you that you need to remove and clean the tank
If that does not work – try some injector cleaner – maybe you have one clogged
