Have another post on here about a shop name and got great responses, Thanks to all.
After reading many post on here it is obvious that some people should not be working on things like brakes. I am not SLAMMING anybody as this is where this idea came from. I will be opening a part time VW only (Well Mostly) In Tallahassee and was thinking about doing a "Do It Yourself Service" there. For a fee, teaching and the customer would have use of tools and be supervised doing the job or assisting with the job. The brake thing really got me as I would hate to see anyone hurt because of inexperience and lack of the proper skills to do a job.
Disclaimler: Once again let me say, "I am not putting ANYONE DOWN. I think this could help the Hobby in a lot of ways, Safer and probably less expensive as I could keep some Folks from making expensive Mistakes. _________________ Current:74 Ghia Coupe w/ 2276

That sounds like it would be fun for about the first week, and after that you'll grab the wrench and do it yourself because its faster than fixing their screw-ups and/or trying to explain it to them for the 14th time in an hour.
They'll also break, steal and generally abuse your tools.

That would be awesome, im in Tallahassee and i have noticed that there are no good VW shops (that don't overcharge you like Furrin and Der Meister). So I think it would be a good idea to have one, but have someone supervise the do it yourself section and make everyone sign a liability waiver. Also, it would be cool to let people store their VWs there while they restore them (with a storage fee), I just bought a new (sort of) 65' panel that needs restoration, but I don't have room in my dad's garage. So a do it yourself VW shop would be awesome. If you do open one, im in the area and you can message me if you want help setting up the shop
We need a good VW shop in Tallahassee _________________ 1966 Standard Bus (No longer a ratrod)

Thanks Coad, the liability part has been considered and a waiver would be in order.
To 66ratrod, yes, I used to work at Furrin, I owned Bob's VW Repair, The best VW shop around, Ask around about Joe or Greezy Joe, I have worked on VW's for 35 years for a living, I'll get in touch when I return from Afghanistan. Something will be happening for the VW scene when I return. _________________ Current:74 Ghia Coupe w/ 2276

Ok to be fair to Furrin, their prices are reasonable. But a do it yourself/mechanic shop would be better.
Thanks for your service in Afghanistan _________________ 1966 Standard Bus (No longer a ratrod)

I like the idea and the market are the ones that live in apartment complexes whom have knowledge and no area to work in. Or for those whom want to learn the how to's on the basic items, brakes, clutch adjustment, valve adjustment tune up. etc. I would say go for it.
Oh ya a tool inventory before and after would be needed. _________________ Volkswagen: We tune what we drive.

If I remember correctly, Click and Clack of NPR fame either had or still do have a shop based on the same concept. A ton of patience would be needed on your part as you may know teaching is not for everyone. |

How are you going to make any money? The rent, heat / ac, electric for lights and hoists, various chemicals and gases, tire machine, etc etc etc will all add up to a surprisingly LARGE number $$$$
There are already places in existence that people can go to and learn about auto repair, a trade school or a night school in your county somewhere.
I don't see a rosy future in this idea but....... what do Iknow??
There are so few air cooled VW's around anymore and a vast number of them are maintained by the owners themselves already. The market is currently small.......and SHRINKIng
There aren't anymore acvw's being made and a huge number disappear off the face of the earth every year!
Best of luck to you but color me pessimistic!!

"the liability part has been considered and a waiver would be in order."
You better talk to a GOOD business attorny and a GOOD business insurance man first!
Your waiver will probably not even be good to wipe your ass with if you accept ANY money or payment at all.
YOU are supposed to be the expert and that is what you charge for. One screw up by the wrong person and you could be toast!
If there is one thing I have learned in business, it's as soon as it looks like you have 2 cents in your pocket to rub together, there are 200 people trying to steal it from you.
Let me share a lesson that took me several hundred thousand dollars to learn....PROTECT YOURSELF FROM OTHER PEOPLE. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

A LOT of guys (myself included) would jump at a Shop/Mechanic Rental to help them work on their own cars and avoid the expensive guessing! I'd gladly sign a Liability Waiver. I'd kill for a good machinist/shop familiar with aircooled VW's in Tally. Did this idea go through? _________________ 1 1970 Beetle - Rejoined to the pan, attempting to work out electrical bugs, and carb troubles |

There's one in Phoenix, not far from me.
http://www.ufixitautomotive.com/
I've never been there. I can't really figure what I'd use such place for, as I have floor jack and jack stands. In the early 1970s when I part-timed as VW mechanic, the place did have a hoist, and that helped some, like letting one get more leverage for certain tight stuff. Wait a minute, that more leverage was for sex !!! Anyway, maybe front ends and brakes someday, can't see me going there to do a VW clutch... _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. For those of you in the tallahassee area. There is a new VW/Porshe shop on Raymond Diehl RD past outback.
I talked with the owner one evening. He had an Aircooled porshe and a 68-71 Beetle in his garage that he was working on. He stressed that it was bone stock and it was a restore job. But he was pleasent enough. _________________ 1 1970 Beetle - Rejoined to the pan, attempting to work out electrical bugs, and carb troubles |

To the Tally folks, I am back from the Sand Box they call Afghan..I am over in Fort Walton Beach right now working with the Army.I have been talking with a guy about doing this out of his Big shop in Tally( South Side} near the Truck Route. Meanwhile I am building a 71 Ghia Vert for the wife and a 2276 for my Coupe at the house. I am home every week end and would be happy to help some folks out at the house. This would help get me back into the scene. I don't know how much longer this Army Gig is going to last.
And 2True, Dude Man, thanks for the kudoes and I still have that set of Baby Dellartos if you still want them.
If anyone wants to get with me just PM me
