Hey there, I am looking for a 65 or 66 beetle body, A guy contacted me the other day about his 65 Sunroof bug, I wasn't sure if the price was to high so input would be appreciated, Its a Cali car in the east coast been stored in a dry garage all its life he claims and the looks of the pictures I believe it.Not sure if the fenders comes with it but the doors do.He's asking $1500 for the body and doors. What do you think. Let me know.Thank you Kory

A solid body and doors is worth it. This is assuming it hasnt been hit real bad anywhere. Having all the fenders and panels would be nice.

For any east coast car, you'll have $1500 in rot repair real quick. A couple years ago I bought a 65 that was freshly painted from a guy in CA for around 4K plus a grand to ship it. It was a complete solid car, but needed everything and I felt that was fair.

If this was me and I wanted to build another 65 ........I'd go look at it and make sure its solid - if it was, see if he'd take $1000. If he would, give him half, go get the trailer and pick it up. If he won't budge on the price, give him half and go get the trailer........

This all hinges on if this is what you really want - gonna take a bit of work to put the car together, but having a nice body to start with saves a lot of grief. I bought a $500 beater to do my last project and after replacing the front apron, the passenger front quarter and dealing with all the twists from all the impact damage, I would have better off buying a nice $3-$4K car and cutting it up.....

Body looks good, very hard to find good solid bugs in NY. I am east of you and they are very rare around here.

Why is that an issue? If you're serious about load up the trailer, grab a stack of cash and go look at it. If it is what he says it is and you make a deal you're ready to take it away right then and there. If it's not, you're only out gas money. There are plenty of us here in NY state, you could always throw somebody $50 to go take a look at it for you and report on its condition too. Nothing tells a seller you're serious more than pulling up with the trailer and cash all ready to go, and it would make them more apt to negotiate a bit as well.

^X2. I sell a bunch of motorcycles starting right about now. Someone shows up with a carload of buddies in a Civic, I'm not moving on the price cuz I know I'm not getting cash right then...or if I am...I'm stuck making sure I'm around another day\time for them to pick it up. My time is worth $ to me (and I have to make sure the dogs don't eat them). They show up with a truck or a trailer, I'm all ready to take my 'want' price if they ask because I know I'll have cash in hand that day and it will be out of my yard. The key is to find their 'want' price which is usually some place in between your 'want' price and their 'asking' price. Hit 'em with your 'want' price and see what they say. Worst he's going to do is say 'no' but most likely if that is too low, he will come back with 'I can't let it go for that but I'll take $XXXX which is usually in the middle. Unless they are a good friend or a friend of the family, the usual 'I don't want to insult them' needs to go out the window. It's a business transaction, not personal.

That being said, I've bought cars for the asking price because after seeing them, I've thought it was a fair and reasonable price and paid it.

3 hours isnt bad - and yeah - get ready to take it home. I think it will fit in the back of a pickup if you dont have a trailer. Someone can comfirm that I am sure.

Maybe with a full-sized 8' bed with the tailgate down and a flag for the overhang. A bare beetle body is what, about 11' or so? You're probably looking at 18"+ overhang. Figure they are about 13' complete, take off maybe 8" on both ends for the bumpers and mounts? I'm guestamating here but you MIGHT be able to pull it off, I think a trailer is a better choice.

You don't need a pickup truck if you happen to own a Sunbird. I can tell you for sure it'll fit on one of those.

You gotta be kidding me. There's no way that would work. This is just a body the OP is thinking of dragging home. You can see how the front wheels in this sophisticated setup really make the whole thing work by resting on the A pillars and keeping the Beetle's spare tire well out of the Sunbird's windshield.

Some people...

Well - you could make a 2x4 support for the beetle body and run it through the windows of the towing(?) car. And this way the driver could help hold it down if the wind starts lifting it - come on Bart - use your head....... Laughing

Plus, the headlight ring osculating in the wind helps offset the affect of crowned roads and improving the stability of the package. You are right, the OP needs to make some modifications for this to work.
