Trying to bring my childhood toy back to life

hey everyone, well i have inherited a dune buggy that has been in the family for many years. Its has been kept at the cottage in a garage and not much maintenance had been done to it.

my brother rebuilt the motor 8 years ago and since then has just sat outside and a number of houses. Motor still starts right up and runs great. since it has sat for so long the tranny for some reason is stuck in second gear.

i have checked the hub under the backseat and everything was fine, i have also checked the maint hole in the side of tranny and everything checks out. so i have removed the engine, tranny and the nosecone to change the hockey stick. a number of people on this site have told me that this is the problem.

how does the hockey stick fit when the tranny is in neutral?

i have attached some pictures, if someone could just let me know if this looks right so i can order some parts. the tranny is a 4 speed man.

thanks in advance
sean

it looks worn but not bad. it would be cheap insurance to replace it since it is out. it sit between the three C shaped pieces of metal. i would gently pull out and push in each of the metal Cs to see if one or all is stuck from sitting.

(the redneck way) i would soak them with PB blaster and the use a rubber hammer to tap them in and use a pry bar and a small block of wood for leverage to lift them out.

i would change the gear oil if you get them moving in case the pb blaster gets into the case.

There are detents and balls between the shift rods that prevent more than one shift fork from being out of neutral at a time. Get all three shift rods centered (in neutral) before you try to move any of them.
