Since my first V-dub, a 99 new beetle, I have been in love with any thing Volkswagen. I have owned many many water cooled of all years and models as well as 1 aircooled. My aircooled was a 71 super
beetle but that was 10 years ago. Back then I knew that car inside and out other than the rear suspension. it came slightly lowered so I never needed to mess with it. I have now purchased my self a 71 standard beetle and needless to say, I'm pretty V~Dub rusty. However slowly but surely I am getting back in the groove of things.

My dilemma is I have no knowledge of the 71 standard suspension. I mean I know its on torsion bars front and back... Right? LOL and there is all this talk about Link Pin or ball joint, (pretty sure I figured out 71s have ball joint) what ever that really means. also swing axle or... whatever the other one is. What does swing axle even mean? and can't I lower my car with just an adjustment of the torsion bars? i know the proper way would be to invest in drop spindles and eventually I will. for now though, if I can achieve a decent drop with minimal cost for bushings probably and lowered shocks then i'm all for it!
anyways, any info you may be willing to share would be much appreciated!

Your car has a Ball Joint front end and IRS rear. Prior to '68, bugs were swing-axle. IIRC, Mexi-bugs stayed swing-axle until production stopped.

There are about 40,000 threads on how to lower your car so I'd do a search if I were you. Front end is drop spindles. Rear can be done without buying new parts. Check this video out:

There's plenty of info in the Late Model FAQ "Sticky's"- *Read before posting*. There's a section with links to all suspension questions.

Please read it first before posting a question.
