Thanks for the tip Matthew. I will head to the store and get the first batch soaking and report back. I don't think I can wait two weeks though for this first set as I'll need some of it this week.

I soaked an oil-burning lamp overnight in molasses and then hit it with some 0000 steel wool, made an amazing difference. I think you'll see quick returns, but the longer the soak, the better. _________________ Marius Strom http://www.marius.org/

Curious on seeing the before & after pics of the difference using the molasses trick. Someone had to have been pretty bored to think: "Let's see...Hawaiian punch....vanilla extract....canola oil....cream of chicken soup....awe, what thee heck...lemme try molasses next.." _________________ .

The molasses solution reacts on the iron oxide on a rusted part. There are a couple other products that work the same, but this is far cheaper. If you want to do bigger parts, a bigger tank is all you need. Cheap molasses can be had at your local farm supply in non-food grade for livestock. I don't think you'd want to use the used molasses on your pancakes though. An interesting read is the Boston molasses disaster of 1919 at this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_Molasses_Disaster
Molasses will dissolve steel over time so use nylon cord to suspend parts in a tank rather than wire.........the wire disappears over several uses. That could have also been a factor in the 1919 disaster and not just shitty construction. Remember, everything was still pretty much all riveted then and not welded. _________________ 30 years experience in the sales of new and used auto parts!

Got the pan back from the powdercoater today and into position for the build.
I'm going to be cleaning/restoring parts as I go.

You can't see the torsion bars, but I'd know if they looked shabby. I found an almost NOS set to use so I can sleep at night
Getting ready to start assembling.

Nice progress! Love the step-by-step pics. This will come in handy when I get to these areas. Keep the pics coming! _________________ .

How do you get molasses to pour? Around here its so thick you have to spoon it out of the can! Is there a ratio of molasses to water needed to make a proper soaking solution? |

I believe someone posted earlier: 1 part molasses to 10 parts water using a plastic jug.... _________________ .

Here is the pile of hardware after soaking in the molasses mixture for 8 days.
It's a little better.
Here is the original hardware on the spring plate covers.
How I get the spring plates in place, 2x4 to the ceiling joists and a jack.

I have a question. How many wires goes to the turn signal switch on a 1200a?

| Very cool project, 66 is my favorite big window model. Being a cloth ragtop makes it that much cooler. (along with being Sea Blue)I have never seen a cloth ragtop later than a 64, too cool. |
