| Anybody get the new Hot VW's mag? I noticed two of the featured dubs were missing the rear engine tin, yet I remember a tech article they wrote not that long ago preaching the necessity of that tin. Any thoughts? |

Don't leave home without it. Great way to cook your motor

| My thoughts exactly, but yet these were two FEATURED rides with monster motors and in direct conflict with one of their own tech articles. I sent them a Tech Talk question, interested to read the response... |

I have a turbo motor and am not running one. Runs cool. I think it's because i have the lid propped open 3" at the bottom. At idle I think it's recycling hot air, though. I'm going to try to fab something up..... _________________ CH3NO2.

Regardless of what those articles say, those cars don't get driven far enough to even matter. Also those are both HIGH maintenance engines that will be out for a top end freshen before any heat related damage could even sink in. _________________ No matter how many "fads" that cal-lookers go through; scallops, bright colors, metallics, white fender seals on colored cars, one off custom wheels, color matched wheels, fully chromed engine compartments, slammed rear ends, super narrowed suspension, etc, nothing beats a traditional, functional, performance first looker. |

Featured cars often have little to do with actual "drive for a couple of hours" street cars Propping the lid open helps, but I wouldn't do it on a long drive or idle around town with no rear tin. I'm even making one for my 57 that will help keep the exhaust heat out of my much modified engine compartment.

| I did notice both we're running deck lid stand-offs. Maybe something there with the air coming in from the top, running down across the motor and then exiting where the tin was? Might work when running, but not so well while sitting in traffic... |

I noticed that too, but like others said maybe with the popped hood they get enough air to stay cool-be interesting to see a comparison done for temps with lid raised and not, both with and without the rear tin _________________ My 1975 Beetle Build Updated 8-21-12

I've seen enough engines with the heads coming off from overheating to know I don't want to run without the tin. Yes a propped open or removed lid would help while moving but not so much in stop and go traffic.

I had to run mine like that for a few years when my turbo and supercharged engines didn't let the breast plate tin fit.
I'm sure sitting around idle in stopped traffic it would have recirculated hot air but on the move the decklid stand offs scoop enough cool air in.
I'd still run a breast plate at all times were possible though. |

Does anyone know if there is a picture or anything with the engine and tin with arrows pointing to each peice of tin and what it's called?
There's so many tin pieces and so many names I'm just trying to figure out which ones I'm missing |

There are these two that I have saved to my favorites. But the 1st one doesn't give the names.
This one is for a doghouse cooling system.

| On a related note, the turbo'd buggy in the February issue has a double whammy against it: a crappy angle-cut ram fan shroud and NO cylinder head shrouds! I looked all over for some hint that it was an alcohol burning engine, but did not appear to be the case. What is the point of building such a beast of a turbo engine and not running at least the fundamentals? |

The black car has a rear tin and the red car is basically a race car. _________________ 79 super Vert

The black '55? The picture I saw of it's engine didn't show it having the rear tin, or the breast plate.

It may be a race car, but if it were my race car I would prefer to have the oil pressure gauge on the dash instead of on the engine where I can't read it. _________________ Jon65

I highly doubt that's the case in the case of this buggy, given how much plumbing there is in the engine compartment. It took me a while to notice the bare cylinders and heads, as it was. lol. |

| hmm, Im thinken again dont call the fire dept...is the bus tin biger than the bug? just looking forward for my 356(replica glass car), biger tins would make it a bit easyer(possiably) to fit&trim out the rest of it so it's sealed up nice & tight,I dont want no splashes up in there from the puddels. |
