'63 Bug rebuild

Should have it by Tuesday.
It's a '63 with very little rust, a bit on the center of the driver's side pan and the surface rust on the body that you can see in the pic. The chassis in general is very clean. The aprons have never been touched.

The engine is in pieces, the decklid is in the car, and the windows are sitting on the floor. But, it's in my garage now.
Got it today. Even got the title in my name. It was a signed California title. No problems at all, though I was nervous the entire time. I had to help the lady at MVD get up and down from the trailer when she verified the VIN. I'm such a gentleman. Razz

The PO's son is the one that helped me get it from the owner's brothers house, to MVD, then back to my house. Hope to get started soon. Gonna refurb the pan first. Noticed a hole cut in the tunnel after I got it home. Gonna have to investigate that. It's behind the front seat on the driver's side.
All the parts are in 3 milk crates, a laundry basket, a cardboard box and a cardboard barrel. Gonna have to do an inventory.
The car was built in Nov. 62, the engine, March '64, and the front axle Nov. '62. Haven't checked the trans, but I'm guessing it's OG as well.

Took the body off today. Actually, started last night. Here are some numbers

40 - minutes to remove 24 bolts
30 - minutes trying to figure out how to break the bond between the gasket, the body and the pan before realizing I forgot to take the last two bolts out that are behind the jack points along the bottom.
10 - more minutes trying to break the bond before realizing I forgot to remove the bolts on the luggage shelf that attach the body to the torsion housing.
It's off now. My wife and I did it ourselves. Wasn't sure I was gonna clear the shifter.
That thing's one heavy mother. And I wish either the aprons were a little taller or the heater channels a little lower. Or, that I had remembered to put some wood on the floor first to set the body on. Pinching fingers isn't fun.

Nails used to hold the OG gasket. Gonna have to Dremel them out.

Found some rust in the driver's side pan, and took a look at the flap that was cut in the tunnel. Not sure whether to buy a welder and fix this stuff myself, take it somewhere, or find a mobile welder.
There's also 6 holes drilled in the battery tray that will need to be filled.
Removed the brake lines and MC too. Should I replace all the lines no matter what based on age, or clean them up and re-use? The main line has some surface corrsosion, so I should replace that, but none of the others have any.
The braking system will get a dual circuit upgrade. The firewall spacers were missing when I pulled the mc off, but with the body off, I was able to reach inside the cavity and get them back out from where they had fallen however many years ago. I just need to bend the firewall straight again.

Actually, when we started, she was up front. She was having trouble, so we swapped ends. I don't think there was too much of a difference. My back doesn't care either way.
