i am in the middle of putting togather my 72 supper bettle "TDI" 1z/ahu... i want to buy gears for a stock irs case.. or a 002 bus case. i have 3 irs transaxles and 1 002 bus from 72 bus. i dont know the proper gearing and such that ill need, but i would assume the people selling the gears can help with that? im a noobie to the site and aircooled vw transaxles... any help with info on what gears to use would be helpfull...

Wrong forum actually....this woukld probably be better underwatercooled cars and other VW's. It would actually be best for that level of engine to be on the VW Vortex forums and not the Samba. But it sounds fun! Ray

Diesels usually turn lower rpms than gasoline engines, so the gearing is usually higher.
Since you will be using higher gears the bus case is no good, you want the SSC bug case, BUT maybe with the bus fourth gear in it.

Locate the trans codes and post them here.

For a low revving diesel, use tall gears. A SSC IRS gearbox with an aftermarket 3.44 R&P will probably be your best bet.

The Bus 'boxes are geared way too low.
