Harry Pellow covers a portion of this operation in ABC's and he talks about using the 356 behind-the-pulley-shroud. I tried fitting one and it is obstructed by the odd 3rd piece bolts of the 912 engine, and perhaps other things as well. What gives? Do I need a 356 3rd piece or can I modify the 356 shroud?

Mr. Forman:

Yes, the 912 3rd piece has 4 extended bolt sockets for the rear mount. The usual practice is to mill off the extensions and tap for screws as I recall.

You could swap in a late 356 3rd piece but you would lose the rightful engine no. in the process. Again, as I recall, there are no internal functional differences between the two. I'd read thru that section of ABCs to make sure.

Thanks for the response. I'll have to read the ABC's again as I don't recall Harry discussing that particular issue. Then, of course, at my age I miss more and more things all the time.

You can dimple the shroud to clear the bolt heads, or drill small holes and bolt the shroud on with the weird bolts, or drill large holes and let the bolt heads stick through. I've seen all three, but I prefer #1. Easy to with a piece of pipe, a 17mm socket, and a hammer. Practice on scrap metal first!
