| I am 17 and developed an interest for cars about a year ago when I got my license.Since then, I have spent countless hours on the internet researching cars, performance upgrades, pretty much everything there is to do with cars. Since summer is approaching I am seriously considering purchasing a '67-'73 bug to rebuild and restore. I know plenty about how cars work, where things are ect.. but I have never actually had any personal hands on experience with any sort of mechanic work. I also only have a 1 car garage to use and a wide array of everyday tools. |

| You should have a job and another car for daily driving if you want to rebuild a classic car. If you don't mind taking the bus to work when your 40 year old car dies, go for it. Good cars to learn on, you simply can't get a more simple car with more widely available parts to restore. |

i'm curious as to why you chose the 67-73 range, 67 is a beast on it's own. |

[quote="Old Paint"]Welcome!!! If anyone wants to sell you their "Autostick" Beetle, punch them in the face and then run away faster. Those things seem like a good idea but they're not.
Old Paint, how much experience have you had with AutoStick's?
In regards to durability I put the AutoStick in high in reliability catagory. My dad owned a company that used all kinds of domestic's for the companies fleet delivery service, many were terrible. In 1965 he decided to buy a fleet of 65 VW's. At that time I was still in H/S but had already assumed responsibility for doing all the maintenance. The one thing I was always used to was doing clutch work. It didn't matter weather or not it was a domestic Falcon, Corvair, Chevy 2, Valiant, or these 65 VW's, the delivery guys just beat them up. In 68 my dad decided to change the fleet to new 68 VW Autosticks....I gotta tell you those cars saved my back, although I did have to do a case stud repair on one of the cars. In 1971 my dad replace the 68's with new 71 super beetles with AutoSitcks. The 71's were the best ones we ever had. All of the fleet cars above were changed out between 100,000 and 120,000 miles.

I think there is a far cry between a 68 autostick purchased in 1968, and a 68 autostick purchased in 2012, but I'll forward you classifieds I see for autosticks..... _________________ Greg
