I know it is possible.. but has any one made a longtravel single seat rail and put a vw in it? I see all those sites with motorcycle powered bikes but i dont want that.. I can build and weld the frame, a-arm front end, rear end, etc.. but im not sure what to do when it comes to having the tranny right behind the seat. Can u have a hydralic shifter on a vdub??! Thanks a lot, pictures would be appreciated, or sites..

Check out my single seater in the 'readers rides' section of this site. Uses regular bug rear torsion and vw front end. Shifting is accomplished by a standard 'side shifter' available at many vw parts houses. It's no long travel buggy, but loads of fun!

They do have cable and hydraulic setups you can use with VW trannies and pedal setups. Also (just an FYI) most VW rails uses swingaxle (early) trannies.

your crazy right?.... 1 out of 100 rails i see when i go out have IRS with later bus tranny's... So when i build mine it will have irs with a 002 tranny, i think i'll have mid engine to make the weight more centered

Actually, most of the buggies I see use swing axles.I live close to the dunes on Lake Michigan and I see tons of buggies in the summer. Most people use them because they are so durable. IRS suspensions bend under stress. I prefer IRS in my baja but I do a lot of work to keep it staight.

The cheapest way is to save up your money and buy a proven frame or plan on building 5 or 6 frames for practice. They look pretty simple but it takes a lot of know how to build a desent one. If you don't plan on racing it, you can get one that is several years old and no longer competive for a lot less. Vic. See -> http://www.1800vw.bizhosting.com/jiggletesting.htm

Yep. I picked mine up for $100 out of some guys yard. It had a poly seat, good swingaxle, rack-and-pinion steering, detachable steering wheel, turning brakes, aluminum fuel tank, aluminum floors. I dissassembled it completely, spray bombed the frame, repaired and painted the fiberglass, replaced the brakes, re-wired it, cleaned the fuel tank, added some rims and tires and an old spare 1600 I had laying around, and I was ready to go. About $600 invested, but $400 of that's in the tires.

Funco is a very well respected Buggy builder. Mine is a vintage SS1 racer, just like this one for sale here:

Here's Funco history:
