Everette,
If you had been passing my house in 1977 you could have bought my 52 for about $240 (£150) It was running, but had a VW bumper on the front.
It was genuine RHD as well but that would have put you off no doubt.
I still have the original hinge plate shown below and the Porsche ignition key. Oh, and because I liked the car before we stripped it for the breakers, I took off one of the plastic rings that goes behind the interior door handle and put it on my 356A as my one had cracked.
So you could say I have a 59 car with a 52 piece.
If only someone had told me to keep it.

Maybe...
Anyway, on that car, 2 different people have told me it should be over $100,000 less so... |
Update - the seller was in contact with me and I was wayy off on my guess on value and so were both of those people that had PM'd me.
So ignore my posts above, clearly I don't understand early 356 values. _________________ How to Post Photos

The key there is:
1. Split window (if that's true)
2. Body bumper (looks right)
3. Original engine (don't know based on the ad, but might be)
4. Solid, original metal (assuming that's true)
The talk about rarity related to production year numbers is pretty meaningless as far as I'm concerned. How many of a particular model is more significant. It could be one of 808 Model 51 coupes, it could be a body bumper, bent window Model 52 (417 coupes, mostly body with a few interim bumper cars). Not knowing the VIN or engine number, it's a guessing game. IMO, regardless of how many were made, a split window is worth a lot more than a bent window. So, in this case, if it's a Model 52 it's worth less than Model 51 regardless of production numbers. Original engine makes a big difference too....not enough info in the ad to know.
Pure speculation on my part, but given the best case (Model 51, split, orig engine, solid metal throughout, all the missing exterior and interior pieces are actually included) some rich guy might pay $150K for a decent starting point.
I don't see a dash top turn signal switch, so I suspect it's a bent window Model 52.
...again, just a bit of speculation because it's fun. _________________ Jack Stenner

Jack
My brothers 51 splitscreen chassis 10964 in the seventies after a return from a holiday in Germany. People often changed items on cars over here to update them. Notice added horn grills, longer hood handle, side rubbing deco strips, sprayed vinyl roof odd spot lights, chrome wheel discs.
The engine was original but uprated to 1500cc from 1300. Still running the crash gearbox but we updated to the 52 full syncro from the red car we scrapped. ( nowdays the crash box would have been rebuilt )
The lovely hella rectangular rear reflectors were still original ( hard to find now) and the Telefunken radio and the original interior was working fine.
The fact the car was changed to RHD in the fifties made many look twice when he drove through Zuffenhausen high street on his holiday that
year. The same person that did that, must have changed the front brakes to ATE discs which needed so much foot pressure it increased his L/h calf muscle a lot!
He bought the car for £110- ( $175-) towards the latter part of the 1960's
What an increase if he had just parked it after the photo and bubble wrapped it somewhere.

Absolutely Roy, my point exactly. Without knowing the VIN the car could be anything, LOL. Presumably whoever buys it will do their research and quickly determine whether it's a split or a bent, since that will have a major bearing on the value.
The conjunction of bent windshield, what looks like a 52 dash, column mounted turn signal switch, and the owner saying it was produced in '52 lead me to think it's a Model 52 and not a split window. _________________ Jack Stenner

Jack,
That made me smile. The term OEM term they also mention made me laugh as well. Just as long as everyone just laughs its not a problem but I guess ' pound to a penny' or 'cent to a dollar' there will be someone who will pay the money.

I just received an email ad from Stoddard's for their "limited supply" of Leistritz mufflers for 356's. While I'll be the first to say that Dansk mufflers are overpriced pieces of crap, isn't $860 a bit pricey for a muffler? |

My local warehouse has them for $1.39 each, so i'd sell them for $2 each or $8 for 4.
BTW... of the sellers 10 posts, 3 are bashing people in the feedback forum. _________________ Glenn
