So I think i figured out my problem, but i wanted to go over it anyway just in case someone else was having the same situation.
So long story short, brakes were working great. Went to the top of Mt. Baldy down here in SoCal (about 8000ft or so) and then a blizzard hit, and we had to take our sweat ass time coming down, riding the brakes the whole time. Took about an hour or so to get down, and in that time I think i over heated my brakes. Ever since that time they have been squeaking like crazy.
I took the pads out tonight to inspect and this is how they came out looking.

The pads are old as hell (at least 20 years) but they had so much meat on them I just put them back on when i did the caliper cleaning and rebuilding a while ago. Any way that plastic or whatever is on it wasn't melted like that, so that is why i assumed i over heated them coming down the mountain. And now I assume that they squeak cause that part is messed up.
So even though those pads are still thick and meaty, i guess it would be a good idea to get some new ones. I also heard that once they over heat they can get kinda brittle and crack up, which is also what they are doing.
So what kind should I get? Is something that autozone will carry? Or does it even matter as long as they are for a late model Westy? Its a '76 Westy.

Looks like it's time to open up your service manual and then fix tthe problem. It appears as if the pistons were pushing directly on the pads. If so then the important retaining plates are missing. If they actually are missing then whomever worked on it before really screwed up.
Also what's the plastic thing you mentioned?
And Autobone is a great place to get oil and air fresheners. And bus oriented VW parts houses are the good place to get bus parts.

Yeah someone definitely lost and/or didnt replace the retaining plates. But there is no way in hell that i can afford the ones from germansupply so idk what to do about it.
And the plastic i was refering to was just the coating or backing on the pads that rid against the caliper pistons.

That is called paint.

Not sure why the back of the one pad shows a full circle instead of the "C" shaped contact that is normal. My guess is that this may have something to do with your squeak.

Pads are pretty cheap, replace if you have any doubts.

Put some high temperature silicon on the contact area between the pads and the piston and see if that helps.

The purpose of the retaining plates is to retain the pistons in the correct position and keep them from rotating to any other position. The full round pattern on the pads probably is because the pistons have been turning.

Get the plates, and do it right per the manual or else just park the bus. If you can't afford to get new ones from Scott then go find some used ones. Raul might have some. just please don't f@#k up you bus anymore.

i have run my bays for the past 18 years with or without the shims depending on my mood with no ill effect. you have work hardened your pads, period.

after getting so hot, it also 'glazed' the rotors too. PM me, i'll tell you what to do, and you'll be back on the road in an hour, for less than 5.00

Thinking about it, If you dropped 8000 feet over the course of an hour, your brakes shouldn't have gotten that hot even going pretty slow.

Maybe, but ever since that incident they have been giving me this problem. They smelled pretty bad once we got to the bottom too.

I took my 1971 up to Baldy hundreds of times. That didn't cause your issue. You need backing plates even if you buy used ones. Just chamfer the edges a little (maube 1/8" with a file. Did you ever own a bike with hand brakes? The leading edge is hitting the rotor before the trailing edge and it causes it to chatter. Get the backing plates. If you continue to cut $20 corners I promise you it will bite you butt big time.

http://busdepot.com/view.jsp?model=57&category=5&group=55&prodgroup=994 or contact Ken Madsen at Busco to have him find a set for you. Also you must be close to Raul - VW76Westy. He may have a used set he can sell you.

Personally if I was going downhill in a blizzard I'd much rather use the engine to brake than the brakes... for two reasons...

I agree that it could just be glazed pads/rotors... chamfer could help too..

I also agree that if people want to drive such cool vehicles they should be prepared to do what it takes, both time-wise and money-wise...

This is all too true. We were riding down in second gear the whole time.

have you ever come down Baldy in reverse using it for braking? I have on black ice. Don't try this trick at home kids.

I have also seen snow and thunder up at Baldy.

The brand Rock auto is selling is Beck Arnley.

Not on black ice but in clay mud in a student "car park" with a pretty much vertical drop in front with the industrial arts building below. Couldn't stop so I put it in reverse and nailed it. Stopped in time.

quite. They were one of the biggest sources of foreign car parts in the 1970's.
